This Dallas Home's Kitchen Addition Is Completely Made of Glass and Steel
For a kitchen to truly act as a home’s hub, visibility is essential. So to give their Dallas-based clients a kitchen built for entertaining that seamlessly blends the indoors and out, interior designer Traci Connell and Rene Gracia, principal of architecture firm RGD+B, installed an addition almost completely made of windows.
Prior to adding a whole new kitchen area, the home was originally somewhat like a dollhouse—all three levels of the home were visible as if the house was just opened up. It underwent an extreme transformation resulting in a glass kitchen made of steel construction and Marvin windows that stretch up to the 22-foot-high ceiling. Upper cabinetry was intentionally not included to accentuate the view of the backyard.
From the glass kitchen, everything is visible. Even though you’re not outside, you can still feel like you’re part of the action out there (and vice versa!). “You’re able to see the kids swimming in the pool and dogs running in the yard, so it’s a wonderful space to entertain and spend some time with the family,” Gracia says.
To bring in warmth, the white oak hardwood floor was duplicated on the ceiling. A quartz countertop by Cambria was selected for the island because of its durability and sleek look. For seating, Connell included comfortable bar stools at the island and a simple yet chic breakfast nook that doesn’t take away from the view of the outdoors.
Right near the kitchen, the living room hosts more seating—including swivel chairs so that people sitting in them can easily turn around and enjoy the view with a cup of coffee or a cocktail in hand. There’s also a wet bar for easy drink-making from both sides of the room.
