Dakota Johnson Says Her Periods Are ‘Ruining Her Life’
I think there's one thing we all can agree on: Periods are the worst-and Dakota Johnson feels the same.
The 29-year-old Suspiria actress (though you prob know her from the Fifty Shades trilogy), opened up to InStyle about her menstrual and hormonal woes, even calling her periods "traumatic."
"My hormonal changes during my menstrual cycle are ruining my life," she said. "Every month. It's unbelievable. It's really f-ing amazing. I can't get a grip on it."
Dakota says these changes affect her body and her brain. "I'm totally scandalized about what happens to my body and brain," she said. "My boobs are like eight times the size they normally are."
Dakota's menstruation issues inspired her to get involved with Global Citizen's reproductive education program to help women better understand their bodies.
For Dakota, part of that means finding which types of birth control or medications work best for you. "It's also very tricky to figure out what type of birth control you're meant to be on, and if it's even healthy," she said. "How do you not jam chemicals into your brain in order to feel good?"
Overall, Dakota said she just wants to better understand her body (yes, even at 29) and to help other women do the same. "I really would like to understand and be able to manage things a little better, know what's happening in my body, and know what I'm putting into it."
Just FYI: If your periods, like Dakota's, are making your life miserable, it's best to talk to your ob-gyn about it. While periods are absolutely a nuisance, they shouldn't be affecting your quality of life, so it's wise to get checked out by a professional.
