Crust & Crumb bakery to open in east Louisville. Where to find it (and what to order)
A new artisan bakery, Crust & Crumb, will open in Prospect likely in the next month, according to co-owner Debi Hatton.
The 3,500-square-foot space is right across the street from the Norton Commons Farmers Market at 6301 Meeting Street.
Opening up on a corner with wrought iron railings and fountains, Crust & Crumb is being modeled after the building across the street from Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans.
Hatton, 57, said there will be outdoor patio seating, fountains, and lots of greenery so customers can also maintain privacy table-to-table. Indoor seating is also available.
Customers can not only enjoy pastries including croissants, holla, babka and cookies but will also be able to enjoy watching the process as it happens.
Co-owners Hatton and her husband Scott Kuchenbrod, 59, decided to design their business with an open concept so that customers can see how products are prepared.
"We want people to feel involved and see what's going," Hatton said.
Customers will be able to see into the kitchen as well as watch how baristas make coffee.
Though baked goods are what started the business, Crust & Crumb will also serve coffee, soups and sandwiches, among other items.
"Our goal is to produce the best that we can, and we've worked really hard to get to that point," Hatton said. "We are committed to being better every day because this is my passion."
In addition to the pastry case and coffee bar, Crust & Crumb has a retail section to sell items that go well with its baked goods including cheese, meat, jam, and other items.
This business has been a lifelong dream and passion of Hatton, who was formerly a nursing professor at Bellarmine. After losing her father to ALS, she decided she wanted to do her baking business full-time.
"Life is just too short to not be doing your passion," Hatton said. "Our goal is to be one of the coolest bakeries they've ever been to. It's going to be a really awesome place for people to hang out."
