Critics respond to CeeLo Green's post about respecting women: 'Didn't you legit get caught drugging the ladies?'
CeeLo Green, musician and former judge on The Voice, experienced backlash after sharing a post on his social media platforms that encouraged respecting women.
Commenters were quick to point out the alleged hypocrisy in his message, as Green was accused of slipping drugs in a woman's drink in 2012 and then tweeted during his court case that people who have “really been raped” are always conscious during the crime.
On Wednesday, Green, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Calloway, shared an image on Facebook and Twitter, which emphasized the "her" in the words “Mother,” “Father,” and “Brother.” It goes on to read, "There's a bit of her in everyone. If something happens to 'her' it happens to everyone else too. Respect 'her.'"
Social media users called out the post due to the 2012 allegations.
"Hey CeeLo where was this info when you were putting ecstasy in the drinks of women without their knowledge," one person wrote.
"Bro... didn't you legit get caught drugging the ladies?" another shared on the post. "Sorry, the hypocrisy is thick here."
"Exactly how much respect were you showing while you were drugging women?" another echoed.
Others, however, came to the singer's defense, stating that he is attempting to grow as a person since the alleged incident. "People have every right to be better and do better. Victims have every right to not forgive those who have victimized them," one supporter wrote.
"All of these men on here with all of these negative [a**] comments! If you don't have nothing good to say, shut the hell up!! Name one person, including yourself that hasn't had not one transgression!!! I'll wait!" another defender shared.
In 2012, Los Angeles police began an investigation against Green when a 33-year-old woman accused him of putting Ecstasy in her drink at a restaurant. The unnamed woman told investigators that she had woke up in her hotel room, naked and in bed with Green, and could not recall the events of the night. Green did not face any sex-related charges due to the lack of evidence.
Blair Berk, Green's attorney, said at the time that the interaction between Green and the woman was "consensual," and that she was "pleased" that no sex-charges were filed.
On August 29, 2014, Green pleaded no contest to one felony count of furnishing Ecstasy to the woman. He was ultimately sentenced to three years of formal probation, 360 hours of community service, and ordered to complete 52 Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
On August 31, 2014, Green sent out a series of insensitive tweets regarding rape.
"If someone is passed out they're not even WITH you consciously! So WITH implies consent," and, "People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!" were just two of the tweets he sent out that day.
Shortly after apologizing, Green deactivated his Twitter account. Some hours later, he reactivated the account and tweeted, "I truly and deeply apologize for the comments attributed to me on Twitter. Those comments were idiotic, untrue and not what I believe."
