'With all the chaos in the world right now, an interracial family is inspiring': Viral phenomenons explain success
A young married couple have experienced social media fame “between 30 and 50 times” thanks to their adorable family photos.
Mikayla, 23, and Adrian Shocks, 21, are Los Angeles newlyweds and parents of a 2-year-old daughter named Ayda. While Mikayla works at a baby product company and Adrian is a college student, they’re also social media superstars who become viral sensations each time they post a family photo.
Exhibit A: On Monday, Mikayla tweeted several photos, which included their toddler, from their Aug. 5 wedding in Paso Robles, Calif., and received 3.5K retweets and 17K likes, from her 64.7K followers.

“We go viral every time I post anything about our family, including photos, videos, or random tweets,” Mikayla tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “It’s happened between 30 and 50 times.”
Mikayla has a few guesses as to why people love her photos. “I’m told that with all the chaos in the world right now, an interracial family is inspiring,” she says. “And I’m one-quarter black and Adrian is one-quarter white.”
The couple are also a modern-day success story — they met on social media after Mikayla saw the basketball player’s photo online. “I thought he was cute, so I DM’d him my phone number on Twitter and wrote ‘Text me,’” she says.
The couple dated for five months, and Mikayla got pregnant at the end of her junior year. “It was a complete surprise,” she says. “My due date was the first day of senior year classes.” Mikayla met with academic and financial advisers to map out a plan to finish her studies on time, and the couple scheduled their course loads around Ayda, handing her off to each other while the other raced to class. “I walked across the graduation stage to receive my diploma carrying my 10-month-old baby on my hip,” she says.
In April 2016, the couple experienced their first taste of viral fame after Mikayla tweeted some outtakes from a professional family photo shoot, which received 24,000 retweets and 55,900 likes. “At that point, I only had 130 followers,” she says. “After that, I just gave people what they wanted — blog posts, photos of Ayda, and everything just kept going viral.”
In December, the couple shared some holiday photos, which received 36.4K retweets and 156K likes.
In May, another family shoot was retweeted nearly 7,000 times and liked 40,000 times.
The couple’s 54-second wedding video, posted to Twitter on Aug. 8, also racked up 8.4K retweets and 29K likes.

Unsurprisingly, the couple also field offers from companies wanting to partner with them, and fans have asked them to document their lives on a YouTube channel. However, Mikayla says Adrian is a bit social-media-shy, and she wants to keep some semblance of privacy. “I want to be as authentic as possible.”
