Cottage Cheese Cherry Ice Cream Recipe Is the Ultimate Dreamy Dessert
The cottage cheese trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, and that's perfectly fine because you can use it to give your favorite desserts a protein boost. One of the latest desserts to get the cottage cheese makeover is cherry Garcia ice cream. You may recognize this flavor as a Ben and Jerry's staple that consists of cherry ice cream with chocolate flakes. This fruit and chocolate combo produces a tasty pint of ice cream. However, if you're looking to make it a little healthier, it's worth making it from scratch using cottage cheese. Keep reading to learn the perks of incorporating cottage cheese into this dessert and an easy no-churn ice cream recipe!
What is cherry Garcia ice cream?
This flavor is made by combining chopped cherries and chocolate flakes into a cherry ice cream base and freezing it. Using these ingredients creates ice cream that's full of sweet and indulgent flavors. Ben and Jerry's debuted this ice cream in 1987 as a nod to the guitarist Jerry Garcia. It eventually became one of their most popular flavors, reportedly earning Garcia's stamp of approval as well. Preparing this ice cream at home is easy and can be good for you with the help of an ingredient like cottage cheese.
How cottage cheese gives this dessert healthier twist
Using eggs and heavy cream for an ice cream base adds fat and calories to the dessert, making it something you'd probably eat occasionally. On the other hand, you won't encounter this with cottage's cheese because of its low-fat, high-protein nutritional content. This dairy product also blends and freezes well to create a rich, creamy and nourishing batch of ice cream. While cottage cheese ice cream is delicious plain, add-ins such as immune-boosting cherries and anti-inflammatory dark chocolate provide the treat with more health perks. (Who says you can't have your ice cream and eat it too?)
A yummy cottage cheese cherry Garcia ice cream recipe
Even if you don't have a fancy ice cream machine, you can still make this cottage cheese ice cream. Simply follow this Cherry Garcia Cottage Cheese Ice Cream from TikTok creator Janelle Rohner, who blends the cheese first to create a silky base before combining it with cherries and chocolate chips. From there, the mixture is frozen in an airtight container for a few hours before it's ready to scoop and serve.
Rohner uses fresh Stemilt cherries, which are a dark sweet variety. Though, any fresh or frozen variety will work fine in a pinch. Similarly, if you can't find zero-calorie maple syrup opt for the regular kind. Not a fan of dark chocolate? Use milk or white chocolate chips for a sweeter flavor. It's clear that this tasty recipe preps without hassle and can be customized to satisfy your sweet tooth. A win-win!
