Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demands apology from conservative writer who fashion-shamed her
Eddie Scarry may be known as a political writer, but he’s quickly being labeled as a troll after posting a sly photo of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to make an assumption about her wealth.
The Washington Examiner journalist took to his Twitter on Thursday evening to share a sneaky picture that a Hill staffer captured of the newly elected congresswoman during her first day on the job. And while most people commenting on the 29-year-old’s orientation day are making mention of her politics, Scarry chose to observe her clothes.
“Hill staffer sent me this pic of Ocasio-Cortez they took just now,” Scarry tweeted in a since-deleted tweet. “I’ll tell you something: that jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.”
He included this photo of Ocasio-Cortez:
People immediately began replying to the tweet, which referenced Ocasio-Cortez’s New York Times interview where she made mention of the difficulty of affording an apartment in Washington, D.C. The story was published just one day after the Bronx-native was elected, and was later mocked on Fox News. It seems that Scarry still hasn’t moved beyond it.
Now, people are calling him out for referring to Ocasio-Cortez as a “girl” and making misguided assumptions based on a woman’s wardrobe.
You may not like @Ocasio2018 or her positions, but referring to her, a duly elected congressional representative, as a “girl” is off the charts inappropriate.

How dare she suggest housing in DC is unaffordable while she whisks around the Capitol wearing JACKETS and SKIRTS!?! The nerve!!!

Why is a Hill staffer taking a picture of a woman from behind without her knowledge? That is the activity of a stalker, and shame on you for broadcasting it. That staffer should be identified and fired.

There’s a thing called credit cards, or borrowing clothes, or having clothes from years earlier. There’s also a thing called being a hack journalist who makes stupid, ignorant, creepy remarks a/b women — see also, your tweet. & there’s a thing called IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

And if she came in in sweats you would call her unprofessional. Dont get mad my friend knows how to look awesome on a budget. Maybe you should ask her for some tips.

Already, Scarry has responded to a number of tweets, ensuring that he doesn’t “feel bad” for continuing to deride the congresswoman.
Yes, the only alternative to this attire is a burlap sack, for someone who claims she needs 100K^ to afford an apartment https://t.co/eVjemk5h9r

You don’t get to mock a very fashionable tie. https://t.co/FNJed5prWs

This is how the misfits on Twitter operate: “feel bad!” I think I’m fine. https://t.co/fjZLLZq8TM

Scarry has since tweeted an apology, suggesting that he found her to look “well put together.”
ATTN! I posted a tweet earlier suggesting the incoming congresswoman looked well put together — ELEGANT even — despite suggestions she’s struggled. The tweet was taken as something else, so I’ve deleted it!

Still, Ocasio-Cortez responded to the since-deleted tweet and even called Scarry out on his display of “misogyny.”
Oh, does @eScarry think he can delete his misogyny without an apology?
I don’t think so. You’re a journalist – readers should know your bias. pic.twitter.com/2KJuiPsUR2

“Dark hates light — that’s why you tune it out,” Ocasio-Cortez told followers. “Shine bright & keep it pushing.”
