Colorado's Steamboat Resort Wakes Up To 20 Inches Of Fresh

The champagne powder cam (located at Steamboat's summit) shows snow piled up to the 20 inch mark at the Colorado resort.

Powderchasers joked on Instagram that "The 'Boat' might have a few folks calling in sick today."

The mid-mountain snow cam, located at the Thunderhead Lodge at 9080 feet, shows the official mountain snowfall. This snow stake is cleared off daily at 5:00am.

The money cam, however, shows the 20 inches in question.

Located at the top of Sunshine Peak, at 10,384 feet, this snow stake represents unofficial snowfall at the top of the mountain.

These totals differ from the official resort snowfall because of its higher location. The snow stake is cleared off daily at 4:00pm.

Fun fact: the term "champagne powder" is not just a marketing tactic. It was coined back in the 1950s by a local rancher who was skiing in the light and airy snow at least a decade before the Steamboat Ski Area opened.

Because we all love hard and fast numbers (even on soft pow days), Steamboat's statistics give us another angle on the recent dump.

The mid-mountain saw 10 inches today, 14 inches over the last two days, and a season total of 281 inches.

There are 166/181 trails open, and 22/23 lifts spinning. 92 out of 181 runs are groomed, and 100% of their terrain is open.

The terrain off Pony Express looks fun right about now. Unfortunately, that lift is currently being repaired, and an 8,000 lb motor is en route as we speak. (On the bright side, repairs will only take a few days!)

Until then, Rolex Trees, Closets, and Shadows look appetizing. Trees always hold powder the longest, and, well... surfing through trees on a proper powder day is a simple pleasure for just about everyone.
