How to Clean a Diamond Ring So It Sparkles Like New
If cleaning a diamond ring at home means dropping your expensive jewelry into a machine, you may want rethink your method—because according to some gemologists, that's the worst thing you could do.
There's been a rise in ultrasonic jewelry cleaners lately, thanks to fashionhsv's viral Instagram account showing hypnotic deep cleanings of diamonds and gemstones. Consumer-grade jewelry cleaners can jostle the expensive stones out of their setting, forcing a trip to the jewelers to have your diamond re-set. The Gemological Institute of America, the non-profit responsible for the gemstone grading system, has researched the best way to care for your treasured jewelry.
"Ultrasonic cleaners cause vibrating fluid to remove accumulated dirt and grime. But they can also shake loose stones from their mountings or chip the girdles of diamonds that are set next to each other," reads a guide to cleaning diamonds on the GIA website.
You can clean your diamond ring with cleaning supplies found in nearly any household and the quick process will leave plenty of time to clean your silver too.
Materials:
Mild dish soap
Water
Measuring cup
Measuring spoon
Bowl
Clean toothbrush
Microfiber cloth
Prep Your Cleanser
Mix 4 cups of water with 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap. Agitate the mixture until the surface foams, and place the ring in the cleanser. Wait at least 20 minutes before removing the ring from the soak.
Buff Out Extra Dirt
Using a clean toothbrush, gently brush away excess dirt from any nooks it may be trapped in, taking care to rinse the toothbrush before tackling tougher sections.
Once clean, rinse the ring under water, then dry and buffwith a microfiber cloth. If your ring is silver or silver plated, silver polish can be used to remove tarnish along the band, but do your best to avoid the setting.
