Chiaroscuro, Adrian-based community men's chorus, opens June 2024 new member drive
ADRIAN — Chiaroscuro, an Adrian-based community men’s chorus, will begin its June membership drive beginning Monday, June 3 and continuing weekly on the remaining Mondays throughout the month — June 10, 17 and 24.
Any men interested in singing with the chorus are encouraged to join the current members at any or all the open rehearsals/auditions on the calendar in June. Auditions will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Adrian, 1245 W. Maple Ave.
During rehearsal, guests will join in the singing of four-part men's choral selections so they can enjoy and experience the sound and camaraderie that comes from singing in a men’s chorus, a news release from Chiaroscuro said.
Summer rehearsals will stress developing healthy singing techniques and effective choral strategies for singing in parts.
Details regarding upcoming performances and rehearsals for the 2024-25 season will be made available. Regular rehearsals are from 6:30 until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from September through May, moving to Mondays during the summer months.
Chiaroscuro is a nonprofit community ensemble under the direction of artistic director and founder Susan Matych-Hager, professor emerita of music from Siena Heights University and the 2010 winner of the Maynard Klein Award for artistic excellence and a lifetime of leadership in the field of choral music, presented by the American Choral Directors Association of Michigan.
The chorus was founded in February 2013 and spent most of its concert season in 2023 celebrating one decade of being a part of the Adrian and Lenawee County community. It most recently performed a May 19 spring choral concert at Holy Rosary Chapel on the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ campus.

The name of the choir is Italian for light/dark, and is a term used in vocal music to describe a technique that results in a warm, resonant sound with great brilliance and carrying power.
The goal of the ensemble is to sing meaningful choral music with “beautiful tone that engages the minds and touches the hearts of the listeners,” Matych-Hager said.
Information about the chorus and membership auditions is available at ChiaroscuroMensChorus.org or on the Chiaroscuro Ensemble Facebook page.
