Chelsea Handler Shares Eye Injury from Wasp: 'Minding My Own Business'
Chelsea Handler's relaxing day was ruined by an uninvited guest.
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the comedian shared a photo on Instagram of herself at dinner, smiling with one eye squinted.
She explained in the caption, "Just sitting here with one eye shut from a wasp bite, while I was minding my own business, in my own bedroom, in my own house, and then decided enough was enough. ???♀? photo credit: @dan_yo."
Though the pictured captured her from an angle that didn't show the end results of the bug bite, she gave a closer look at the extent of the sting on her Instagram Stories with a series of snaps.
She showed the intact side of her face in the first Story, smiling wide. The Chelsea Lately alum then exposed the blemishes in another picture, with the text, "And then the other side." On the side of her left eye, the 48-year-old had big, red marks that spread to her cheek.
However, she didn't let it affect her seaside day drinking with friends, sharing another photo featuring herself double-fisting drinks, including what appears to be a frozen cocktail, while sitting next to a friend. Handler wrote, "Sometimes you need one drink and sometimes you need 3. @dan_yo."
New York City hospital Mount Sinai notes that wasp venom is toxic, and "some people are allergic to the venom and have a serious reaction if they are stung." Though the sting can cause "swelling of throat, lips, tongue, and mouth" and can, in severe cases, cause "rapid heart rate, severe decrease in blood pressure, collapse and difficulty breathing," the hospital notes that "most people do not need emergency medical treatment if they are stung."
