Prepare to get your bidi bidi bom bom binge-watch on. Selena: The Series is coming to Netflix this year. The scripted drama will follow the story of the Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla, through her childhood and career in the 1980s and early 1990s. (If you're unfamiliar, consider Tejano the get-up-and-dance Tex-Mex of music.) This is one binge-worthy show made to get you off of your couch and moving right along.
"Mexican-American Tejano singer Selena comes of age and realizes her dreams, she and her family make tough choices to hold on to love and music," according to Netflix.
Unfortunately, Selena's story has a sad ending: She was only 23 years old when she was fatally shot by her fan club president and friend Yolanda Saldívar. This year marks the 25th anniversary of her tragic death.
If you watched Jennifer Lopez's star turn as Selena back in 1997, get excited for a new in-depth, extended version of the singer-songwriter's life. The Netflix series will show what went on all around Selena, going deeper into the story of the Quintanilla family, Los Dinos band, and how they all dealt with her rising fame.
Netflix tapped the Quintanilla family, who helped develop and executive produce Selena: The Series, and a powerhouse Latinx cast brings it to life on-screen. Get to know the real-life musicians, family, and friends around Selena and all the cast playing the iconic roles. You may recognize some familiar faces (Hi Christian Serratos!) but many are streaming newcomers ripe for their big break.
