Cardi B incites backlash with 'insensitive' question for fans: 'Beyond tone-deaf'

Cardi B recently took to Twitter to ask her followers for some shopping advice — but the response was less than enthuiastic.

On Sunday, Dec. 6, Cardi asked her fans a simple enough question: “Should I spend 88K for this damn purse?” Since Cardi is close with her fans, the so-called Bardigang, she was genuinely just asking for opinions and advice.

Instead, what she got was an intense wave of backlash from people who can barely afford to pay their rent amid a pandemic and global economic crisis, let alone a designer purse.

“Cardi we are going through a really rough time right now & a lot of people r scared that they won’t even be able to put a roof over their heads or food on the table,” one person said. “I love you but we r still going through Covid and the government isn’t doing s*** to help us and hasn’t 4 months.”

“Asking Twitter if you should buy an $88,000 purse is insensitive rn I don’t care what anyone says,” the same person added.

“Donate the money to hungry people,” another user responded. “Tweets like this are why we want to eat the rich.”

“Sure why not? Why bother donating that money to charity to help people this Christmas who are out of work from the lockdowns when you could have another purse sitting in your closet,” a third angry fan replied.

All of the condemnation didn’t sit well with Cardi. As the “WAP” singer pointed out in several follow-up tweets, she has donated to fans and charity organizations in the wake of the pandemic.

Cardi then took it a step further and offered to match fans’ donations. This still didn’t placate people, though.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you give away, tweeting about buying an $88,000 purse in the midst of a pandemic where people are skipping meals and terrified that they’ll be evicted, is deeply insensitive and unnecessary,” journalist Yashar Ali said. He also noted that Cardi’s CashApp donations were sponsored by the app and didn’t actually come out of her pocket.

After a lot more back and forth, Cardi eventually apologized while simultaneously calling out the lack of action on the part of the government. However, she also added that she still fully plans on buying the bag with her hard-earned money.
