This California Home Is the Definition of Romantic Elegance
Although we'd expect nothing less from the Rachel Ashwell, the owner of Shabby Chic.
You can see Rachel Ashwell's mantra of "beauty, comfort, and function" clear as day in her gorgeous home — as well as both her traditional British heritage and now laid-back California lifestyle.
But her all-white color palette stands out most of all. Even though Ashwell admits there was a time when choosing white was considered "safe," now she thinks it's a neutral color with wow factor — even going as far as calling it powerful, brave, and statement-making (we have to agree!).
Her self-described "hodgepodge" style (a little bit Spanish, southern, English, and country) lends itself to layering new treasures with time-worn beauties. In Ashwell's kitchen, open shelving allows her to show off her collection of eclectic dishes.
But Ashwell's heart remains loyal to flea market finds and says their authenticity is "hard to duplicate without true living and loving." We're loving her antique table and chandelier in her pristine dining room.
Even though she lives in a warm climate, Ashwell wanted her home to still feel cozy and romantic. Which is why there are multiple fireplaces and (most importantly) a heavenly all-white master bedroom.
Another romantic touch? The floor to ceiling windows in her office that show off views of her rose garden and offer inspiration while she works on her Shabby Chic business.
While white has a starring color in her home, Ashwell says the neutral color is also a perfect canvas for layering. Here, she adds a light pink bedspread and grey floral drapes to create a smoky palette in her daughter's bedroom.
White wooden stairs lead up to several bedrooms for guests, including this romantic suite with grey floral bedding. The shutter on the inside of the window to block out light provides a country chic touch.
Ashwell credits her British heritage as to why she loves whimsical details, which she showcases in this guest bedroom with patterned wall paper and a pointed lace bed skirt.
Ashwell's pool exudes secret-garden style. Two white (what else?) sun chairs are parked next to the water for daytime or nighttime relaxation.
