A Bunch of Super Fancy Props Were Stolen from 'The Crown' Set
The Crown's jewels (not to be confused with the Crown Jewels, heh) have reportedly been stolen. The Sun reports that suspects stole a "huge haul of precious gems and antiques" used for the Netflix show's upcoming fifth season, including an expensive replica of a Russian Faberge Egg purchased by the Queen’s grandfather.
Per The Sun, "three lorries" were broken into ahead of filming scenes with Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce (aka Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip), and about 200 props worth around £150,000 (over $200,000) were taken. Aside from the aforementioned fancy egg, candelabras, jewelry, a grandfather clock, silverware, and a birdcage were among the items stolen.
“The gang managed to gain access to the lorries, break them open and strip them of the lot," a source said. “Producers have an incredible eye for detail and every item was meticulously chosen. To lose the lot is just heart-breaking.”
Apparently, the theft happened during the final week of filming The Crown's fifth season last week, and antiques dealers have been asked to be on the lookout for the items.
“This couldn’t have come at a more frustrating time, another source said. “Producers are frantically trying to find replacements. But given so many were unique, it won’t be easy.”
Meanwhile, South Yorkshire Police explained that “It is reported that three vehicles containing props used in film and TV were broken into and a number of items taken. Officers investigated,” and Netflix added “Replacements will be found and filming will not be held up.”
