It's out with the Duke and in with the Viscount.
On April 19, news broke that Bridgerton season 2 has triumphed over the show’s first season in a ratings duel, prevailing at no. 1 as Netflix’s most-streamed English-language season of a TV series ever on the platform. Though the drama is used to shattering records, this time it was because of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma's (Simone Ashley) undeniable chemistry — or as the internet affectionately calls them, Kanthony.
“After four weeks atop the English TV list, Lady Whistledown is most pleased to reveal that Bridgerton season 2 has ascended to the #1 spot on the Most Popular list with 627.11 [million] hours viewed, ahead of Bridgerton season 1 in second place,” Netflix said, according to Variety.
The streamer continued: "This marks the first-ever series to hold both the first and second place on a Most Popular list. This week, season 2 clocked 66.61 [million] hours viewed and appeared in the Top 10 in 88 countries.”
As viewers know, Bridgerton season 2 bid adieu to the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) who won the hearts of viewers with lines like "I burn for you." The period drama then shifted its focus to Julia Quinn's following book The Viscount Who Loved Me and in turn, the eldest Bridgerton sibling. Unsurprisingly, Anthony's passionate romance with Kate healed the heartbreaks caused by the Duke's exit and renewed fervor for the show.
Shortly after Bridgerton season 2 made history, fans took to the show's official Instagram account to court Netflix for more Kanthony content. Under an Instagram video dedicated to Kate and Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran)'s admirable sister bond, folks voiced their pleas to bring back Kate and Anthony immediately.
“Feed us with Kanthony content now that they've surpassed all the records,” one person wrote in the comments section. “And the real love story of #Kanthony, when will it be?” another added. “I want to see Kate and Anthony!” a different fan said. “Kanthony is the real love story lol," a follower commented.
Fret not, Bridgerton will return for both a third and a fourth season with its cast members confirming there's more in store for Kanthony. (In fact, season 2 dropped some serious hints about what's ahead for the Viscount and the Viscountess.)
“Kate and Anthony are just getting started,” Simone told Deadline in late March. "In season 2, there was a lot of push and pull between Kate and Anthony, there were complications with the family, and then they find each other towards the end. I think everything is just starting."
We're eager to see the couple grace our screens again!
