BREAKING: Utah DOT Approves Gondola for Little Cottonwood Canyon

There is recent news coming out of Utah that addresses the traffic congestion in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has selected a gondola system as a solution. However, the approval of funding for this project is still pending from Utah's Legislature, and it is anticipated that environmental groups may file lawsuits. Prior to seeking approval, several measures will be implemented by late 2025, including tolling, improved bus services, and the establishment of a new mobility hub. The second phase of the plan aims to install snow sheds in areas prone to avalanches and enhance parking facilities at trailheads. In the third phase, a gondola will be constructed, along with a new parking structure adjacent to the La Caille restaurant. Once the gondola is operational, UTA plans to discontinue its bus services to Little Cottonwood Canyon.

An interesting aspect of this announcement is the revised cost estimate. Initially, the gondola was projected to cost $550 million. However, due to various factors, the updated cost estimate now stands at $729 million, exclusive of the annual operating expenses, which amount to millions of dollars.
