From Town & Country

Admittedly, Venice doesn't conjure images of crystal clear water, but just a fifteen minute water taxi ride away is Lido, a small island off of Venice, that is situated right on the glittering Adriatic Sea. The grande dame of Lido is The Hotel Excelsior, the long time home of the prestigious Venice Film Festival. With its singular Italian glamour, seaside location, and now a Michelin star chef, Hotel Excelsior checks many boxes for those looking for a Mediterranean getaway close to "City of Water." Hotel Excelsior's general manager, Alessio Lazzazera, gives T&C an inside look at this historic property.

Many people associate Venice with canals, but not with the clear Adriatic Sea that's at the doorstep of the hotel. Can you explain a bit about where the hotel is located and why you call yourself "Venice on the Beach?"

Our tagline is "On the Beach in Venice," being the only luxury Resort in Venice with its own private beach. Situated just a brief boat ride from the heart of Venice, Hotel Excelsior is a tranquil hideaway for distinguished international travelers, and, of course, movie stars. Hotel Excelsior is a destination in its own right: a historically significant Venetian palazzo, enriched by exotic Moorish architecture.

How would you define Venetian hospitality—what differentiates it from other Italian cultural capitals?

Venice is different from other Italian cultural capitals because life here is so very unique in comparison to the other cities. The Venetians are deeply proud of their spectacular home and way of life, and this is emulated through their hospitality and willingness to impart their love of the city to those who visit. Long standing traditions and history are respected and cherished in a way not otherwise seen in other cities in Italy.

This season you recently opened Bistro del Mare by Cera, led the by the two Michelin star Venetian chef Lionello Cera. Why this chef and why this concept of contemporary Italian cuisine?

Lionello Cera's two Michelin stars, coupled with his Venetian roots and respect and knowledge of the local ingredients seemed a perfect match for our resort. At the Bistrot del Mare, Cera creates exquisite dishes true to the Venetian tradition yet with a contemporary flare. Dimmed lights and lapping waves provide the backdrop to the exquisite tastes and aromas: a treat for every sense!
