Beloved South Haven ice cream shop closing after 66 years

Sherman's Dairy Bar, a South Haven summer favorite to several generations, will close its doors with the end of the 2024 season.

The ice cream shop, located at 1601 Phoenix St., was known for its many flavors, ranging from strawberry, butter pecan and Mackinac Island fudge to "chocomania," French silk and cappuccino, created one batch at a time for 66 years.

Before the dairy bar's beginnings in ice cream, Sherman's was a dairy and milk delivery business dating to 1916. Port Sherman, the grandson of the original owner, began creating ice cream in the 1950s and the sweet frozen treat won out over the bottled milk business, becoming a South Haven staple for decades to come.

"We have loved being part of your summer traditions for 66 seasons, and we know many of you have fond memories of a scoop at Sherman’s," the dairy bar said on Facebook.

Sherman's Dairy Bar is set to close on Oct. 26.
