Bella Hadid Gets Her Own Drake Song
Last summer and fall, Drake and Bella Hadid were rumored to have had some sort of romance happening. Drake threw the model's 21st birthday party in October, and they were seen leaving a club together before in June. Us Weekly reported that Drake ultimately ghosted Hadid in November. “Things ended over text when he basically ghosted her,” a source told the outlet. One said they were just friends; another source told Us they were casually dating.
Neither Drake nor Hadid commented on the romance rumors then, but Drake seemingly broke his silence on it now, on his new album Scorpion's track "Finesse." The song recollects Drake's fling with a fashion It girl who sounds a lot like Hadid. Here, the lyrics, via Genius, annotated with all the Hadid references. Note too that Hadid has publicly maintained she has been single since splitting with The Weeknd in November 2016, so a casual, private romance between them was entirely possible.
Intro:
Yeah
Turn everything up
Yeah, oh yeah
Turn everything up a little more
Verse 1:
I want my baby to have your eyes
Hadid of course has blue-green eyes. The baby Drake is referring to is likely the one he confessed to having with another woman, Sophie Brussaux:
I'm going against my own advice
Should I do New York I can't decide
Fashion week is more your thing than mine
Hadid is a model who regularly walks shows during New York Fashion Week, which happens in February and September. Drake is debating whether he should attend any shows and sit front row or attend any fashion parties during the week. Given Hadid and Drake's alleged romance history, he's probably referring to September 2017's spring/summer fashion week. The month after, he'd throw Hadid's 21st birthday, after all.
I can't even lie
I'd rather stay inside
I can't do suit and tie
Can't be in a room with you and stand on different sides
Possibly a hint that they didn't want to be public, especially since many fashion week events have heavy press attendance.
One thing at a time
I have to learn to hide
One thing at a time
Emotions running high
I wish you felt alright
Hadid may not have wanted the attention that came with another high-profile romance, especially one that did allegedly cause drama between her ex-boyfriend The Weeknd and Drake, both high-profile Canadian rappers. Page Six reported that the two were beefing over her in October. “They both hang in the same Toronto crew and now they’re having to pick sides," a source told Page Six. "The Weeknd performed and people on Drake’s side were like, ‘I can’t show up to that...Got to have allegiance.' They aren’t getting along right now...The groups are beefing because [Drake] broke the bro code. They 100 percent hooked up.”
Pre-Chorus:
Just hitting my line
All the time, all the time, all the
You stay on my mind
All the time, all the time (yeah)
Chorus:
It takes some finesse
I seen you finesse
He can't know finesse
The "he" is presumably Hadid's back-on ex The Weeknd. After The Weeknd and his then-girlfriend Selena Gomez split in October 2017, The Weeknd was spotted at Hadid's New York City apartment in November. They've since continued to ignite reconciliation rumors by kissing at a Cannes Film Festival party in May and most recently going on a PDA-filled dinner date in Paris this June.
You stay on my mind
Verse 2:
You and your sister
Too hot to handle
Drake is referring to Hadid's model sister Gigi Hadid.
Things will get cancelled
I would make time for you
Commitment
Going the distance
I'm new to all of this
Chorus:
It takes some finesse
I seen you finesse
He can't know finesse
You stay on my mind
The phrase "you stay on my mind" may be a hint it's not fully over for Drake yet, though it may be for Hadid.
