Go Behind the Scenes of the In the Heights Movie
Like so many film projects, the premiere of the In the Heights film, Jon Chu's movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning musical, was pushed back for roughly a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. But now, it's finally in theaters (and available to stream on HBO Max). After you've watching the movie, go behind the scenes of the production with these photos from set.
Miranda not only created In the Heights, he also starred in the Broadway show as Usnavi. But for the adaptation, he's mostly operating behind the scenes, serving as a producer. That said, he does have a small role in the film: that of the Piragua Man.
“We were literally recording the score when all of this started happening,” he said of the pandemic. “There’s a lot that remains to be done on that movie. We were finishing the score and the mixing and just getting the music exactly right.”
Here he is, perhaps sneaking a bite of the props on set during a pre-pandemic filming day.
Anthony Ramos will follow in Miranda's footsteps, playing Usnavi in the upcoming movie. Ramos is familiar with the role, having helmed the show when In the Heights traveled to the Kennedy Center for the performing Arts in Washington D.C. in 2018. He and Miranda are close friends, having also worked together on Hamilton, in which Ramos played Miranda's on-screen son, Philip.
In June of 2019, the cast of In the Heights was spotted filming in New York City. Marc Anthony, who Miranda says will play a "brief but pivotal role" in the project, exiting his trailer on set.
Grace, a singer-songwriter and relative newcomer to the big screen, stars as Nina Rosario in the film.
Here Grace is dancing with Corey Hawkins, who plays Benny.
Daphne Rubin Vega is no stranger to musical stardom. She originated the iconic role of Mimi Marquez in Rent; in In the Heights, she occupies the role of Daniela, the community's bold hairstylist (and resident gossip).
Here, Rubin-Vega is joined by two TV stars, Dascha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black) and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who both play women working at Daniela's salon.
Melissa Barrera, who is perhaps best-known for her roles in multiple telenovelas, will play Usnavi's love interest Vanessa in the movie.
Here, Miranda and Barrera chat on set.
