Augusta Eats: When a good comfort-food restaurant closes, a better food truck opens

Tawanda and Gerald Harris are taking their Infinite Delights and hitting the road.

The husband-and-wife team that opened Infinite Delights Baking, Catering and Events in south Augusta in January 2023 made an announcement July 18 that they said left them "heartbroken." July 26 would be the restaurant's last day open at 2906 Peach Orchard Rd.

But don't let that news overshadow the good news - Infinite Delights has moved to a food truck and already has started parking and pitching food tents around the Augusta area, serving meals for pick-up or delivery.

The truck already has appeared at the city's regular Candleight Jazz performances on Augusta Common, and is expected at the next one from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 1.

Infinite Delights also has been invited to Food Truck Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Windsor Plaza Shopping Center, 4104 Windsor Spring Rd., near its intersection with Tobacco Road.

The Harrises left 2906 Peach Orchard better than they found it. The space had been the location for at least nine other restaurants in the past 60 years. By the time they assumed control of the building in 2022, it had been stripped of just about any usable fixture.

Mr. Harris, who owns his own general contracting business, used that blank construction canvas to help bring Mrs. Harris' vision to life of a modern, styish brunch spot that is still available as an event space.

The Infinite Delights food truck serves from a reduced menu that is posted on its social media and might change from week to week.

The foods that catapulted Infinite Delights into popularity are still there. While the beef hamburgers are delicious, the perfectly seasoned turkey burgers leave customers with the difficult choice of adding condiments or enjoying the burger as-is.

The chicken wings come either with freshly prepared sauce or Infinite Delights' signature dry rub. Either way, the wings stay crispy outside and juicy inside.

Shrimp and grits might not sound like a typical grab-and-go menu item from a food truck, but don't be deterred. Infinite Delights' take on the Low Country brunch favorite uses a homemade roux whose richness makes the dish a can't-miss favorite.
