Astrud Gilberto, 'The Girl From Ipanema' Singer, Dead at 83
Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer known for her hit song, "The Girl From Ipanema," has died, new reports reveal. She was 83.
The news was confirmed on Monday, June 5, after her granddaughter, Sofia Gilberto, made a public statement on social media. No cause of death has been disclosed as of yet.
"I come to bring the sad news that my grandmother became a star today ? ?? ?," Sofia wrote in her Instagram caption, which has been translated from Portuguese. She also noted that Astrud is now with her former husband and Sofia's grandfather, Jo?o Gilberto, who passed away in 2019.
Sofia went on to describe some of her grandmother's accomplishments, calling her a "pioneer" and highlighting her influence in the Latin music community.

Astrud sang the vocals on "The Girl From Ipanema," which was released in 1964, and she quickly rose to international fame after the song put her on the map, bringing Brazil's bossa nova music to the American music scene. She went on to record an extensive catalog of music, and in 2008, she became the recipient of the Latin Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award.
"I love and will love Astrud eternally and she was the face and voice of Bossa Nova on most of the planet," Sofia continued in her Instagram post, which also included a montage of photos of her late grandmother. "Astrud will be forever in our hearts ?? ?? and in this moment we have to celebrate Astrud."

Paul Ricci, a frequent collaborator of the late music legend, also shared a message to social media to relay the news.
"I just got word from her son Marcelo that we have lost Astrud Gilberto," he wrote. "He asked for this to be posted. She was an important part of ALL that is Brazilian music in the world and she changed many lives with her energy. RIP from the 'chief' as she called me. Thanks AG."
