Artistic flare meets Market at the Square with new mural

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Urbana is taking some artistic strides this summer.

The city is brushing up the Market at the Square by painting a mural in the parking lot where it’s held. More than 20 artists from all over the area submitted their work, hoping to be picked to design the mural. The artist who was chosen, Cameron Raad, said he drew inspiration from his childhood in creating it.

“Some of the games I played as a kid — like SimCity or, if you remember, those rugs that you would play with your Hot Wheels cars on — it’s kind of that vibe,” he said. “Sort of, you know, like an idyllic, very bright, colorful, urban environment.”

The mural is Urbana’s first large-scale ground mural, measuring 24 x 205 feet. The city hopes to have the artwork finished before the farmers market this Saturday.
