Artist creates hyperrealistic mini sculptures of pets: ‘It’s such an honor’
If you ever wanted to pay tribute to your most loyal companion, Little Felted Friends is a perfect way.
Artist Alyson Gurney stitches wool miniature replicas of her customer’s pets. Gurney began the project when she first made a felt version of her dog, Drift. Eventually, her friends started requesting models of their dogs and Little Felted Friends evolved into a full-fledged business.
Gurney uses photos submitted by clients to create the uncanny duplicates. A bearded Collie, black Labrador and a gray-striped cat are just a few felt minis featured on her TikTok. Each figurine can take three to four hours, is made of 100 percent wool, has hand-painted glass eyes and a tiny heart sewn inside.
“It’s basically like sculpting with wool and you’re using the needle to craft the whole thing and carve it out of this fluffy ball of wool,” Gurney told Insider.
Many of Gurney’s customers are people who have lost their pets and want a way to remember them. The artist even asks the owners to tell her about their personalities so she can properly capture them.
“It’s such an honor they let me craft their pet and they have the confidence in me to really get the character and personality and likeness of their pet,” she told Insider.
Gurney usually has a long waiting list since she’s the only one crafting the miniatures, but she opens up slots on the first day of every month — just be quick! They fill up within minutes.
