This week we are in that wonderful but unpredictable shoulder season between the last summer days and the glimpses of fall to come. Mile High Kite Festival is 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sept. 4 in Beech Mountain, North Carolina. Kite clubs will be on hand to demonstrate flying techniques and run kid-friendly contests. Free kites will be given to the first 100 children under the age of 13 each day. Other activities include races with kids pulling parachute kites, face painting, kiddie rides, live music, and a variety of craft and food vendors. Admission is free. Parking is $5. Olivette Riverside Community and Farm’s HarvestFest is 3 – 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at Olivette’s Riverside Park. The event is a benefit show in support of ASAP’s (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project) Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables program. HarvestFest is a celebration of local farmers, community and music. It includes games, live music and more. All farmers and their families will have free entry to the event. Tickets are $25 each.
