Andy Grammer saved himself for marriage, despite wife Aijia Grammer's opposition
At first, Andy Grammer and Aijia Grammer don’t seem to have much in common. Starting at the “Keep Your Head Up” singer’s more “uptight” personality in comparison to Aijia’s laid-back attitude and ending at Andy’s decision to wait for marriage before having sex despite her continued opposition, the pair may come off as an unlikely match.
“It’s supposed to be sweet. She was just, like, confused,” Andy tells Yahoo Lifestyle, while Aijia hilariously adds, “You were a 28-year-old virgin, and I took that s*** on our wedding night.”
But when they were first acquainted, the fellow singers could never have imagined even having this conversation. Instead, they both say they were simply friends, neither one of them having any immediate attraction to the other or even entertaining the idea of it.
Best pre-birthday ever. Thank you @andygrammer 🎂

“We were just at music school together, and we were kind of like acquaintances,” Andy explains. “It wasn’t like I saw you and slow motion happened, like ‘That’s my wife.’ It was more like, ‘Hey!’”
Some of it was due to their quite opposite personalities, with Andy joking that Aijia was definitely more of a party girl. But the biggest reason their feelings weren’t yet realized was likely because of a bigger life event that put them in different places — the tragic passing of Andy’s mother. That same event, however, would eventually bring the pair together.
Andy explains that part of his grieving process included the making of “Kathy Grams,” little songs he’d write for audience members who needed cheering up during his concerts. One day, Aijia presented her own candidate for one of the uplifting tunes, and the pair got together to write it.
“She came over to write it and shows up in this smoking hot cocktail dress,” Andy says, before Aijia jokes that her options were either that or an outfit that resembled hospital scrubs.
Aijia felt something too.
“He was my buddy, so it was weird energy,” she explains. “I came back and I was like, ‘That was super-weird — I like you. Do you like me?’ You sort of said no.”
A week later, Andy changed his mind. The two began dating, and just a few years later, Andy pulled off a romantic and surprising proposal — although it wasn’t so romantic from the start.

“Andy shows up to my house one day. He’s in a suit, he blindfolded me and threw me in the car, and I didn’t know what we were doing,” Aijia says.
Her confusion only escalated as Andy drove her around for an hour until she warned him she might get carsick. He eventually pulled over and took Aijia’s blindfold off to reveal that they were back at her house.
“But it’s all made up like a French restaurant and there’s a line to get into this French restaurant with all of her friends and family,” Andy explains. “So one of her good friends is like the maitre d’, and we get up to the front and I’m like, ‘Listen, I called ahead, I hope we could get a spot.'”
“They were all doing, like, terrible French accents,” Aijia adds. “He proposed, and I said yes, and everyone cheered. It was so sweet.”
“I’m a pretty humble guy,” Andy says, “but I nailed that.”
After getting married in 2012, the couple had a daughter named Louisiana, and they make the effort to balance their lives as artists and parents. Most recently, Aijia was working to release her latest single, “For You,” while Andy was on tour for his third album, “The Good Parts,” and also launching a podcast. Still, they say they don’t spend more than two weeks apart.

“The hard and the good things about being a touring musician is that you’re gone a lot,” he explains, “but you’re constantly coming home to someone, which is cool.”
