As the biting cold becomes impossible to ignore, it's time to shift our focus to practical outerwear. Whether you believe in the efficiency of wearing the same puffer for the entire season or prefer having a variety of jackets to pick from, you'll want to choose carefully: The coat is basically the entire outfit, and it should meet all of your sartorial needs.

There are a few key considerations when making such a significant purchase. First, think about how you'll wear it. Will you size up to accommodate layers underneath? Does it have proper insulation? How big are the pockets? (Other details to look for: zippers, a detachable hood, filling.) You'll also want to assess its staying power — ideally, you'll wear this winter jacket for years to come.
