Grandmother names can be traditional, have a special meaning or be a fun, playful nickname.
Some celebrities have shared the reason behind their own grandma names. Goldie Hawn wrote about choosing Glam-Ma, in her memoir, “A Lotus Grows in the Mud”: “The wonderful day arrived; my grandson, Ryder Russell, burst forth into this world. I could barely contain myself. But was I really a ‘grandmother’?” Hawn wrote, adding, “My son Oliver decided I should be called ‘Glam-Ma,’ which I thought was quite brilliant and made us all laugh so hard.”
Katie Couric wrote on her website about the origin of her grandma name, Gogo. She said she couldn't use Kiki because it was her sister's name, and she liked Gigi but felt it was too common.
“I decided on Gogo after a friend told me that was what she used,” Couric wrote. “Plus it seemed fitting, because I’m like the Energizer Bunny, always on the go-go.”
Other celebrity grandma names include Lovey (Kris Jenner), Lalo (Blythe Danner), and Bubbe (Kathie Lee Gifford).
Grandmother names are a big decision. After all, that's what they will be called for the rest of their lives! The good news is there are plenty of grandma nicknames to choose from.
