50 incredible rail journeys for 2019
I am such a sucker for all things rail that I still find myself whooping with delight whenever I take a train that stops at the swish new Blackfriars Station built – yes that’s right – directly over the Thames. For stations with a view of the water (and the city for that matter) they don’t get much better than this.
Actually, I still enjoy getting the train from Victoria Station – home to Telegraph Towers no less – to Clapham Junction. Again it involves crossing the river (and doesn’t the Albert Bridge dazzle at night) and then shunters past the buzz of the new development on the site of what was Battersea Power Station.
Don’t get me wrong, I like rail journeys a lot further from home too – Eurostar to Paris, night trains to Budapest, and jaunts across Asia, Australasia and, this year, hopefully, America, when the chance is proffered.
Many of you – not least Griff Rhys Jones – share my passion for train journeys. In the spirit of this, our rail experts have chosen 50 great train adventures for the year ahead, broken down into day trips, overnighters, tours and epics (see below).
There are also some illuminating insights from Mark Smith (aka the Man in Seat 61 and rail aficionado extraordinaire) on his many and varied train experiences. Did you know that he proposed on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express? What a smooth operator...
Happy train travels in 2019.
