5 things to do this weekend: Firefly Ride, Classic City Car Show, poetry workshop and more
Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of July 12-14.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.
Firefly Discovery Ride
WHERE: Firefly Trail (205 Old Commerce Rd.)
WHEN: Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to noon (Free admission)
DETAILS: Join the Athens-Clarke County Trails and Open Space staff on this family-friendly bike riding activity that also serves as a guided tour through the history of the Firefly Trail area. Guests will experience a unique view of Athens and learn about what the future holds for the Trail. No registration is required.
Taste of the World Lunch
WHERE: Athentic Brewing Company (108 Park Ave.)
WHEN: Friday, July 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: Baskat Catering owners Felix and Kat Ahmed are experts in international cuisine, specializing in nine cooking styles from around the world. Guests will be able to purchase plates of Thai food and dine inside the brewery or on the patio, with Athentic's selection of tasty local craft brews to pair with the meal.
Adult Poetry Workshop
WHERE: Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room (2025 Baxter St., Multipurpose Room A)
WHEN: Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: Athens Poet Laureate Mikhayla Smith will conduct a free workshop for adults to learn how to balance life and creativity. This incredible opportunity will include a collaborative poem made up by the workshop group, crafted with Smith's guidance, assistance and inspiration.
Classic City Car Show
WHERE: The Classic Center (300 N. Thomas St.)
WHEN: Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. ($20 admission; free for kids age 12 and under)
DETAILS: Dozens of vehicles from an Athens area collector's stockpile will be on display in this car enthusiasts' dream event that is scheduled to feature concessions, music and a silent auction. Really Really Free Market
WHERE: Reese Pope Park (375 Reese St.)
WHEN: Saturday, July 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: Held on the second Saturday of every month, the Really Really Free Market is Athens' biggest and best yard sale, because everything in it is free. How do they do it? Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to bring clean and undamaged items to donate to the market.
