This $23 Greg Norman cabernet right on par with wines twice the price | Phil Your Glass
Greg Norman is a man who wears many hats, in addition to his signature straw hat with a colorful shark emblem.
Ex-pro golfer, CEO, airplane pilot, helicopter pilot, scuba diver and wine brand owner, to name a few. Norman really knows how to live. (A fair assumption for the CEO of LIV Golf.)
Akron golf fans may remember Norman’s amazing 40-foot chip-in birdie on the 18th hole at Firestone Country Club in 1995 that won him the World Series of Golf. In his career, the Aussie golfer spent a total of 331 weeks atop the Official World Golf Rankings while winning 20 PGA Tournaments and 2 majors.
Greg Norman is also considered to be one of the most elite sports entrepreneurs in the world. His Greg Norman Estates wine brand, which sources grapes from California, Australia and New Zealand, has been a part of the Greg Norman Company since 1996.
“The Shark" and his winemaker Bill Nancarrow have recently taken their California wines to a championship level with their introduction of the $22.99 Knights Valley cabernet. Knights Valley, located in Sonoma County on the border of Napa Valley, is known for its exceptional cabernet grapes.
The label has been redesigned with a can’t-miss silhouetted shark fin. The wine inside has been transformed into a must-try Knights Valley gem.
The 2021 Knights Valley cabernet easily drinks like a $50 bottle. It has lots of elegant blueberry and black current flavors leading into a smooth-as-silk finish.
It was great with a few kalamata olives and slices of espresso-rubbed BellaVitano cheese from Acme. It was equally delicious with Meredith Dairy's Australian sheep and goat cheese cubes marinated in garlic oil and black peppercorns served on fresh crostini. Whole Foods in Columbus is the closest place to Akron that carries this cheese.
For the final round, I enjoyed sipping on a glass with strip steak slices as well as some homemade roasted eggplant, sausage and mozzarella stacks. The versatility of the wine will suit almost any meat off the barbie.
Fans of Beringer's $29.99 Knights Valley cabernet should definitely give this wine a try. I was fortunate to be able to do a side-by-side tasting with this Knights Valley twosome. Both wines drank way above par ? however, for $7 less per bottle, my money is on The Shark.
Buy this wine at crave in downtown Akron, Beau’s Market in Copley, Mustard Seed Market in Montrose, Krieger’s Market in Cuyahoga Falls, Cornerstone Market in Munroe Falls and Fishers Foods in Canton.
Meet John Daly
Professional golfer John Daly will be at the Cuyahoga Falls Market District from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The dapper deep driver will be signing autographs and promote his ready-to-drink Good Boy Vodka cocktails. Daly's "swing juice," which sells for $17.99 for an eight-pack of cans, will also be served at the bar.
