Not all bralettes are created equal — some are meant to support, others to flaunt. But, they all hold space smack dab in between the traditional underwire and, well, no bra at all. As dressing habits have shifted amidst the pandemic (more sweatpants, less high heels), the necessary undergarments have shifted as well. Comfort is a priority, which is where the bralette (sometimes referred to as a wireless bra) excels.

What Is a Bralette?
In the simplest terms, “a bra is made with an underwire, while a bralette is not,” says Araks Yeramyan, the designer of luxury lingerie brand Araks. That being said, bralettes can range in their appearance, from triangle bralette shapes similar to what you might find in a bikini, to a banded style much like a sports bra. “While bralettes were once made exclusively for cute and comfy moments, the technology enhancements within this category allow for endless use,” adds Abby Vernon, VP Aerie Intimates, Apparel and Offline merchandising.
What to Look for in the Best Bralettes
“We intentionally don’t differentiate between everyday and occasion bralettes,” Araks explains of her goal when designing bralette silhouettes. “We encourage women to wear something that makes them feel beautiful every day.” Still, there are a few different styles to consider based on your needs.
Fit: If comfort is a priority, look for bralettes that are seamless and include design details like adjustable straps or a thick band at the bottom. When trying on a bralette, make sure to move around a little to ensure that your breasts fit correctly and you won’t be fussing with it all day long. The best everyday bralettes, often designed to be worn underneath a top or sweater, often come in neutral colors and can include removable pads or even be totally strapless.
Material: When it comes to material, take note of what you’ll be using the bralette for. Stretchy materials such as nylon are great for when you need a bit more support or coverage. Delicate silk or lace bralettes will feel luxurious when worn under a t-shirt or blouse.
Support: Depending on your intentions, you can find a range of options that run from minimal to more heavy-duty supportive bralettes. At home, a cotton bralette is just the right balance between minimalist feel and support. There are also cute bralettes that may not offer the same level of comfort or practicality as a support-focused style, but instead are meant to be a less constrictive alternative to lacy, strappy and silky lingerie.
Bralette vs. Bra
Besides the simple classification of underwire or not, bras and bralettes support breasts in different ways. Bras tend to cup the breasts and offer lift, particularly push-up bras, which can often be important for women with larger busts who need more support. Bralettes tend to offer more minimal coverage and support for those who may find traditional bras constricting.
While both bra and bralette styles have a wide range of purposes and looks, consider a bralette when you’re looking for lighter support and more freedom. Reach for a traditional bra when you need a bit more coverage and containment. Your needs may change based on whether you’re at work, at home, or going out, so having both options in your rotation can be key.
How to Find a Bralette that Fits
Finding the right size bralette can be tricky, as many brands eschew traditional cup sizing for the simpler Alpha sizing (XS to XL). Reading reviews or visiting a brand’s website for specifics on measurements can help to ease the process — something that both Araks’ and Aerie’s websites offer. “In 2018. we introduced our Best Fit Finder (BFF) to improve the bra fitting process, reimagining the traditional measuring tape with a simple tool that is less invasive and helps you find your best fit,” Vernon explains. “It’s not about measurements; it’s about how you feel in the bra.”
For banded bralettes, which typically come in Alpha sizing, this tool may be easier to use, but for triangle or cup styles, you may want to have a tape measure handy when determining what is right for you. When trying on a bralette, make sure to move around in it to confirm it fits snugly without feeling constricting. Also, keep an eye out for any gaping around the breast area, which might suggest the style is too big.
Bralette Trends for 2022
“This year, we are most excited about the emerging trend of the bra top — a bralette that is designed with the versatile end use to wear layered or proudly on its own,” Vernon says. “Imagine a crop top that offers enough support to make the bra truly optional.”
This hybrid style has been adopted by many luxury brands, who prioritize aesthetics and can be relied upon to offer creations that could just as easily be styled back to a pair of high-rise jeans and a leather jacket as they could under a sheer shirt.
Another trend worth keeping an eye out for this year is the sports bralette. This silhouette is like a sports bra, but may have thinner straps or a lighter material that make it a nice choice for yoga or low-impact activities. Try this option out for relaxing at home as well if you prefer something without buckles or hooks that might rub uncomfortably.
How to Wear a Bralette: Bralette Outfit Ideas
Bralettes are the ideal everyday piece because of their versatility dressing for both day or night. If you’re looking for a few ways to wear them for more casual daytime occasions, the easiest look to throw together would be a bralette worn under a relaxed t-shirt and styled with jeans. The combination has remained popular for so long because of its comfort and the fact that it just looks cool.
For a yoga class, try styling a sporty bralette with a matching pair of leggings or bike shorts. If you prefer a bit more coverage, you can add a sweat-wicking workout tee or a light jacket over the top (layering is great for workouts anyways, as your body will heat up and cool).
During daytime activities where you may want to look a bit more polished, make sure to pair your bralette with looser silhouettes (and make sure your top or dress isn’t too sheer).
To wear at work, a bralette could be worn under a floaty blouse, while fancier occasions call for a playful statement bralette to show off under your favorite top or dress. Opt for a style with a fun color or texture and layer it under a sheer or cutout top, or even a dress with a lower neckline. You’ll still have the coverage you need, but with the added bonus of a little playfulness. If you’re feeling especially daring, you can style a bralette on its own with a pair of high-waisted pants and a shrug sweater.
For days when you’re at home relaxing and plan to wear your bralette while you cook, clean, or just watch tv, keep your look casual. You can easily move around the house in nothing but a bralette and boxers if that’s your preference. Or, try a button-down pajama set with a bralette. If it’s chilly out, opt for sweats with a bralette worn underneath for a little extra support.
