In a newly published article posted on Etsy’s business blog written by the company’s CEO, Josh Silverman, data revealed that the public’s interest in face masks has sky rocketed amid the current global pandemic.
After the CDC recommended all Americans to wear face masks, consumers interest in fabric face masks has dramatically increased on Etsy. It’s important to note that a cloth face mask will not protect you from getting COVID-19, although the CDC explains it may prevent spreading the virus, if you have to leave the house. “CDC is additionally advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others,” the website states.
From April 4-6, “buyers searched for face masks on Etsy an average of 9 times per second, over 2 million searches” and the website is continuing to sell hundreds of thousands of face masks per day. The data also says that “the number of face mask sellers has increased five-fold in the last two weeks to nearly 20,000 sellers.” Additionally, “face mask” was the most searched term on Etsy in the past two weeks.
With the devastating shortage of N95 medical masks, it’s crucial that the public saves the surgical masks for our frontline healthcare workers. It’s also important to remember that Etsy is a company that is operated by independent artists and small business owners.
