20 People Die In Birthday Party Limousine Crash in New York
In what the National Transportation Safety Board is describing as the "most deadly" accident in almost a decade, 20 people were killed on Saturday afternoon in a stretch limo accident in Schoharie, New York. The dead included all 17 passengers in the limo, its driver, and two additional pedestrians at the crash scene. All but one were killed on impact, with the final victim dying en route to the hospital.
The limo had reportedly been hired by a group of friends and family en route to a winery tour birthday party. According to reports, the vehicle drove down a hill along New York's state route 30 and "lost control" while turning through an intersection many locals have described as "a dangerous one" at speeds of up to 60 miles an hour. It then continued into the parking lot of a country store, where it collided with a stationery vehicle before rolling over into an adjacent creek. The second vehicle in turn struck the two others killed in the lot, as well as injuring others, the country store's owner told The New York Times. In an additional statement, per CNN, the store noted it is now raising funds for local volunteer first responders:
"Our hearts and prayers go out to victims' families, our customers who tried to assist, and our staff who tried to comfort. We're a small community and you will all forever be a part of our family."
The deceased, per The Daily Mail, included two pairs of newlyweds-one recent bride, identified as Amy Steenberg (whose birthday was apparently the intended celebration), was killed alongside her three sisters, as well as their husbands, and other close friends and family members.
Both the NTSB and New York state officials are conducting investigations into the crash.
