Teenager astounds social media with story of her ‘life-saving’ decision to skip school: ‘I was so scared’
A teenager is going viral after sharing the wild story of how skipping school “saved” her life.
The 18-year-old, named Amanda, explained the strange incident in a TikTok video, which now has more than 21 million views.
Her story took place when she was in fifth grade, on a day she decided to try skipping school. Amanda gave her mom all kinds of “fake symptoms,” none of which she was actually feeling at the time.

It turned out, however, that something was actually very wrong with her: Her appendix was about to burst. One minute, Amanda was “skipping” school with a made-up stomach ache. She was in surgery a few hours later.
She explained every detail in a follow-up to her original TikTok, during which she explained each step of the whirlwind day.
“I didn’t wanna go to school, so I lied to my mom,” Amanda said in the clip. “So my mom took me to the doctor — but the joke’s on her because I lied to the doctor too.”
Somehow, the symptoms Amanda told her mom and doctor matched up perfectly with the condition she didn’t know she had. The doctor was concerned, so she called a surgeon to say that a patient would be coming in soon — with acute appendicitis.
“We pull up to the hospital and I’m like, ‘Yo, what?” the teen explained. “At this point, I was so scared that I start to sob.”
Amanda got the surgery, and woke up “in so much pain.” Later, her doctor came in to tell her that if she’d come in a few hours later, her appendix might have burst — and she could’ve died.
“And I still don’t know why out of all the days in the year, that was when I wanted to stay home and lie,” she concluded. “But it saved my life!”
TikTokers seemed blown away by Amanda’s story, sharing thousands of reactions in her video’s comments.
“What, so lying is good?” one user asked.
“Dude that’s a God moment right there,” another wrote.
“I will forever lie, I don’t want my appendix to burst,” another joked.
