There’s a funny thing that happens in New York during wintertime: One day, everyone’s breezing through the parks wearing slim camel trenches, and the next, people are buttoned up in puffer coats, darting toward the subway like the next Great Appalachian Storm is upon us. Nevertheless, colder temps are here—and whether you live in the Northeast or are rolling your (icicle-filled) eyelashes from somewhere in the Midwest—we share a mutual interest: the desire to curl up in a warm, cozy blanket. Picture thick, puffy duvets and electric/heated numbers to cult-classic throws like Jenni Kayne's Alpaca Basketweave and Barefoot Dreams’ CozyChic blanket.
Yet, before we get into our picks for the 15 warmest blankets (peep: the faux fur in number two, which doubles as eye candy for your sofa), you need to ask yourself: How warm do you need this thing (i.e, for extreme cold)? And what kind of feel do you prefer (like a thick, faux fur or breathable bamboo for sensitive skin)? If you need a little guidance on that front, head to the bottom of this article for a breakdown of the warmest blanket types and materials, according to a sleep doctor and textile expert.

Across the board, we curated this list to make sure each one: a) was made of comforting materials, like wool, fleece, sherpa/faux fur and down, b) possessed above-average insulation, weight or electric warming properties, c) was durable and d) easy to clean.

1. Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Throw Blanket
The one celebrity-approved blanket we’re seeing *everywhere* right now? The Barefoot Dreams CozyChic throw. It has A-listers raving, including Chrissy Teigen, Khloé Kardashian, Hailey Bieber and Kate Hudson. In fact, and Teigen loves hers so much, she even had to clarify to her followers that she wasn't paid to tweet her love for it. (She really is that big of a fan.) "If you are struggling for a [gift] for someone, get them a Barefoot Dreams blanket. I use mine 365. It stretches and wraps over your shoulders and feet and nothing else compares," Teigen says. So what’s all the hype about? Well, for starters, it's crafted with a ribbed, 100 percent polyester material that feels like butter on the skin. Yet, what makes it so special is its stretchy feel and oversized construction (which stretches to 6 feet long).
Not to mention that it’s also machine-washable and shrink-, pill- and wrinkle-free—so it will keep its softness whether it's brand new or 500 washes in. “I never thought I'd be so obsessed with a blanket, but somehow I am,” executive managing editor Catrina Yohay says. “It's soft, warm and stretchy, while still being incredibly lightweight. I have about 10 throws stacked up in my living room just waiting to be used, but this has replaced all of them with permanent residence on my couch.” She also adds that it’s “100 percent worth the crazy price tag.”
2. Pretty Rugged TS Luxe Blanket
Why this blanket was featured on Shark Tank? It’s constructed with luxe faux fur on one side and a waterproof, windproof and machine-washable RuggedTex? satin on the other. (So you can use it indoors and out). Even better: It’s the only brand to offer machine-washable faux fur. This editor currently has it draped over my sofa and I have to say, this throw *absolutely* lives up to the hype. First, because the faux fur fabric is delicious—it feels like an enveloping hug of warmth and cushion and it’s my ultimate go-to on extra chilly days. Beyond the sumptuous fur, however, its cleanability is unlike anything else I’ve tried. Liquids roll off the satin side and the faux fur washes beautifully on cold with a delicate detergent (I let it air dry). There’s no color fading or loss of softness and it looks good as new when it’s fully dried.
The real kicker, however, is how it’s basically indestructible when it comes to outdoor use. While some blankets say they can be brought outside, they’re usually too thin to keep you insulated (or too delicate to recover from dirt and grass stains). This one truly lives up to its wind-proof backing; I feel as bundled in the park during 28-degree weather as I do when I’m holed up in my cozy apartment. What’s more, it stands up to pet hair and muddy paws—everything comes right out in the wash. Oh, and did I mention that it comes in six stunning colors and patterns?
3. Jenni Kayne Alpaca Basketweave Throw
My first thought when I laid my hands on this alpaca basketweave? This is what luxury feels like. The 50- by 70-inch throw is made from a high-end blend of alpaca and merino wool, and its handwoven, basketweave construction offers a Goldilocks level of warmth—not so thin that you’re still itching for a sweater, but not so thick that you start sweating immediately. Plus, aside from its super-soft feel, everyone—including me—is *obsessed* with this blanket’s earthy neutral color options. I have the cocoa hue (though it’s also available in ivory, light grey, oatmeal and charcoal) and it’s totally on point with this year’s New England Eclectic trend.
Senior editor Dana Dickey also says, “Jenni Kayne’s alpaca basket weave number is basically my Linus blanket this winter. I carry it from room to room, it’s so lightweight yet surprisingly warm. I sleep underneath it and like to drape it around my shoulders in Zoom calls because it’s so elegant looking. The fringe hasn’t gotten worn or tatty even though it’s been in solid rotation as a blanket or a room accessory, folded over the back of my living room chaise. Also, surprisingly, it’s easy to spot clean—stains just lift off with a damp cloth.”
4. Kohls The Big One Oversized Throw
Why does this blanket have nearly 25,000 5-star reviews? It’s big enough to share—at 5 feet by 6 feet—and comes in plenty of colors and patterns (25, to be exact). And since it's on sale for only $13 right now (!!), it’s shockingly affordable. But you might think that price point means it’ll be thin or scratchy. Not so... The polyester material is backed by the Hohenstein Textile Testing Institute to ensure there are no harmful substances, according to the brand, and reviewers rave about its heat retention and overall quality.
"They are soft and don't pill. You can wash and dry them, and they stay nice and soft. Great when it's cold and flu season, when children are sick," says one person. Furthermore, this reviewer loves the blanket so much, she regrets not grabbing more while they were on sale since she gets so much use out of them, too. "I got three of these at $10 on [an] early Black Friday sale; wish I bought more. I am waiting for the next big sale before Christmas," she says.
5. UnHide The Marshmallow 2.0 Faux Fur Throw Blanket
Yet another faux-fur blanket that’s beloved by our editors? This number from UnHide, which is a sustainable lifestyle brand that uses almost entirely recycled materials to create buttery soft, vegan faux-fur throws (that feel just like chinchilla, according to the website). The Marshmallow 2.0 is its most popular blanket—and aside from its ultra-plush feel and 100 percent cruelty-free materials—people love it for its thick, nine-pound weight and oversized, 60- by 80-inch dimensions. “This is my favorite throw blanket ever,” director of affiliate strategy, Pam Masin says. “It’s obviously soft, but it’s also a pretty substantial weight for a throw blanket. I like it better than a weighted blanket (it’s not constricting or heavy necessarily), but still has that all-wrapped-up/therapeutic thing going on. I had no idea it was made of 90 percent recycled materials…”
Another reviewer also says, “1) it’s HUGE and looks nice at the end of my queen-sized bed. 2) It’s heavy, almost feels like a weighted blanket. Definitely keeps you warm. 3) The inside is a soft almost velvety fabric while the outside is the plush fur.” It’s also worth mentioning their note on how it holds up over time: “It washes AMAZINGLY. I wash it with cool water on a high spin with detergent only. Dry on low heat/delicate. (Sometimes I let it air dry.) I’ve washed it 5+ times now and the ‘fur’ part feels exactly the same as the day I bought it. My dog has also completely claimed this blanket, lol.”
6. Riley Extra Warm Goose Down Comforter
If you’re looking for something ultra-thick, insulating and puffy enough to give that layered, Four Seasons Hotel look—this comforter is your guy. I currently have it paired with a gorgeous Matouk duvet cover and I can’t get enough of its 750-fill-power for unparalleled fluffiness for winter (more on that below). The 100 percent sateen cover shell creates an elegant, tailored look and the box-stitch construction ensures the filling doesn’t shift or distribute unevenly (even if you move a bunch in the night). Plus, this one also happens to be machine washable (which is rare for comforters that use RDS-certified down). That said, while I found this thing to be surprisingly breathable—given the lofty fill power—I wouldn’t recommend purchasing if you run hot. After an hour of tossing and turning during the summer, I resorted to sleeping on top of it. Still, this article is about warm blankets, and if you’re looking for bedding that will keep you warm and snug for colder temperatures, I’d put this at the top of your list.
To that end, one reviewer (who certainly doesn’t sleep hot) says this is a perfect option if you’re looking for something extra-extra-warm: “Thick and Cozy. I tried five comforters and landed on this one! I found the Riley comforters to be much more soft/squishy and quiet compared to others. Cheaper comforters felt almost stiff to me, and also made a lot of noise when you squeezed/moved them. I first ordered the all-season Riley comforter and while it was sufficient from a warmth standpoint, I found it to be too thin for my liking…Since I liked how it felt, I tried the extra warm. It was by far the most full/lofty comforter I had tried. It looked similar to when I put two comforters in my duvet cover. It is also very soft/quiet like the all-season was. I will say it is definitely very warm. I am not uncomfortable when I have shorts/tank top on but I have been used to sleeping in warm pants and a sweatshirt in mid-west winters (I tend to sleep cold) and I would definitely be too hot doing that with this comforter. One major bonus is I felt like my feet were always cold in the past and I slept with thick socks on in the winter. Now I can sleep barefoot, and my feet are nice and warm!”
7. UGG Ana Knit Throw Blanket
For decades, we’ve clung to our UGG boots because they’re just that cozy—and as it turns out, the brand’s sherpa throw blanket has the same comfort factor. Not only does it have a mushy, reversible design with an eyelash sweater knit on the face and 100 percent sherpa on the back, but we’d buy it for the 10 pattern and color options alone (which include everything from a deep port wine tone to a coastal navy blue stripe). Even better, it has a mid, four-pound weight that’s hefty enough to keep you bundled during winter and light enough to use at the foot of the bed all year long. Plus, unlike our boots, this blanket is completely machine-washable, so you can keep it looking (and smelling) fresh all season long.
One reviewer says, “This is our third Ana Knit blanket order. I don’t usually like Sherpa-lined things because they snag on dry skin and pick up and hold on to things (dry grass, etc). This blanket, like the slippers, is super soft Sherpa. It doesn't snag on my dry heels, pick things up off the ground, and it washes beautifully. The weight of the blanket is also comforting and the (twin) size is perfect for couch naps or to have an extra blanket on a twin-size bed. My daughter walks around in hers cape-style, like Darth Vader.”
8. Sleep Number True Temp Weighted Blanket
Who says you can’t have a warm blanket that also cools? This is perhaps the most customizable blanket on the market where it includes one weighted inner blanket and one quilted removable cover. While the inner blanket has temperature balancing, 37.5? Technology that continuously adapts to keep you comfortable, the quilted outer cover features active particle technology that attracts and removes moisture to prevent overheating (aka great for sweaty sleepers). Not only does this make it great for co-sleepers with very different nighttime metabolisms, but the cover is removable and machine-washable (so it’ll always feel crisp and clean). In a PureWow100 review, VP of editorial Candace Davison writes: “Normally, cooling tech sounds like a lot of jargon to us, but after trying Sleep Number’s 37.5 tech, we’re believers. The poly-cotton cover gives it a smooth, sateen-like finish, which also helped keep our reviewer cool. Another nice feature: It comes in queen and king sizes, so you’re not constantly readjusting a throw or twin-sized weighted blanket to cover you through the night.”
Plus, Dickey also adds: “My most dependable intimate and sustaining relationship is with my single-size True Temp Weighted Blanket. I wish I was kidding. There’s a fabric tech that makes it not too hot to dive under, even in summer, and the 12-pound weight doesn’t make me feel accosted, just cuddled. I changed by bed’s colorways to match its dark blue zip off cover, which is easy to pop on and off to wash.” Oh, and did we mention it’s available in both 12- and 20-pound weights?
9. Serta Heated Blanket
With a 4.4-star rating and more than 1,500 reviews, it makes sense why people are raving over this electric blanket. First and foremost: It’s super easy to use with a controller that allows you to customize its temperature levels and it includes an auto-shutoff function that turns the heat off after four hours. On top of that, it both looks and feels good with eight different colors and a super soft hand, thanks to one side of brushed microplush that can be flipped to reveal plush sherpa lining on the other. Combine that with the fact that it comes with two easy-to-use controllers (only one for Twin and full sizes) that allow you to set both its heat and power levels, and you've got the perfect combo to send you off to dreamland in total comfort. And, to make things even better, this baby is machine-washable for an easy cleanup.
"Spill something on it while binge-watching TV? Used while sick? No worries! The electric throw is WASHABLE because the power cord detaches," wrote one reviewer who'd never used an electric blanket before. "This is easily the most surprising feature." Another reviewer also adds: “This blanket has absolutely been worth the money. Going on winter no. 2 with it, and it’s still soft and easy to wash/dry. It’s been a savior in the winter for cold nights. It has a temperature scale of 10 and a timer for up to 8 hours. I usually only need to use levels 1-5 as it would make me sweat any higher unless it were extremely cold. It’s so nice to preheat my bed before sleeping on a cold night. My dog also loves cuddling under the blanket with me.”
10. Anthropologie Lustered Velvet Alastair Quilt
Hailing from Anthropologie’s oh so luxurious collection is a velvet quilt that lives up to its namesake. It’s layered with a dreamy blend of cotton, viscose and polyfill that’ll keep you warm, while the top fabric—which features intricate stitching on high-sheen velvet—lends a textured (and royally dramatic) look. It’s available in five bedding sizes, including twin, full, queen, king and California king—and while it comes in three colors, we’re impartial to the ‘peach’ tone that’s subtle enough to work with any aesthetic. The machine-washable construction also means it’s easy to care for (and great for year-round use).
One reviewer writes, “This quilt fits my king-sized bed perfectly. I wasn't sure how the velvet would feel in person but it is super soft and very comfortable for me and my dogs. I live in MN and my furnace went out recently—when I woke up my home was 50 degrees—but I slept very comfortably and warm through the night with this [thing]!” However, it’s worth noting that another reviewer writes, “I purchased the peach color and it elevated the look of my bed dramatically…I did notice a spot where my dog lays on it, the shine sort of muted there, so I rotated it and put a throw under him.”
11. Apparis Shiloh Weighted Faux Fur Throw Blanket
If there’s one blanket this home editor has her eye on right now, it’s this one from NYC-based vegan fashion brand Apparis. For those who don’t know, the outerwear label—which received its investment capital from model/entrepreneur Karlie Kloss—has gone viral for its in-house “Pluche” material, which is an irresistibly silky, cruelty-free faux fur derived from 100 percent polyester. So, after expanding its collection to homewares during the pandemic, it makes sense why people are kvelling over its weighted, 8-pound Shiloh throw. Aside from the signature Pluche feel, people are obsessed with the blanket’s 60- by 80-inch construction (also available in 50x60 inches), which can bring some of the deep pressure stimulation and anxiety-reducing benefits mentioned above. The best part? (Other than it being machine-washable.) It’s available in a range of 11 ultra-trendy colorways, including camel, emerald, ivory, latte, navy, smoke, stone blue, verdant green, blush, bubble pink and tobacco (our fave, shown above).
“Literally the best (non-living) thing you will ever have on your bed,” one reviewer writes. “The material is amazingly soft and thick, it has a great weight to it and it’s super warm. Feels like a hug but isn't crushing. This size is perfect for two people in a queen-size bed.” Another person also says, “I've never met a blanket as wonderful as this one. It exceeds all expectations. Soft, calming, enchanting, whimsical, BEAUTIFUL. If you want to spend less time cozied up in bed do not buy this blanket. If you want your home to remind people of comfort, elegance, and a stunning softness then this blanket is for you.”
12. Cozy Earth Silk Comforter
This lavish comforter is filled with 100 percent mulberry silk (i.e., great for your skin and hair) and shelled with premium bamboo viscose, making it fluffy and ultra-soft to the touch. While the smooth texture and plush fibers make it unbelievably soft—there’s a reason why Royals have loved silk for centuries—it’s also surprisingly strong and durable. The real draw here, however, is that it comes in two fill options: standard and extra. The latter features an ultra-enveloping feel that’s basically comparable to a (very luxurious) embrace. Plus, silk features naturally temperature-regulating properties, so its all-season breathability can keep you insulated through winter and cool in the summer.
“This has been an absolute game-changer in my sleep routine,” one reviewer writes. “It’s hands-down the most comfortable and soft bedding I have ever experienced. From the moment I snuggled under it, it felt like I was enveloped in a cloud, providing a luxurious and heavenly sleep experience.” They also add: “The high-quality silk fabric feels exceptionally soft against the skin, and the use of sustainable bamboo materials in the comforter aligns perfectly with my desire to support environmentally conscious products.”
13. Yeti Lowlands Blanket
This outdoor blanket is made up of two cushy layers: one, a super-soft and insulated quilt and the second a waterproof polyester that's tough and designed to hold up against the elements. While the quilted side is made from polyester and rayon—available in alpine yellow, camp green, canopy green, fireside red, Nordic purple and smoke blue—it also has a DWR coating, which means spills from liquids will essentially bead up and roll off the surface instead of sinking in. What’s more, it weighs five pounds, so it’s thick enough to keep you insulated without being a hassle to move around (aka great for camping or chilly picnic days).
As for the warmth factor? One reviewer writes: “I took this blanket to the drive-in movie theater. To my surprise, there wasn't grass anywhere. Its soft, padded side was plenty comfortable after I laid the blanket on the gravel, and since it's impervious to dust and debris, I was able to shake it clean. I haven't taken it the blanket to the beach yet, but it kept me warm on a 40-degree evening while I was stargazing in the Texas hill country.” He also adds, “I can also attest to its washability. My dog got the blanket muddy after a hike, and I was able to toss the blanket in the washer and dryer with no issues whatsoever. The blanket (and its carrying case) came out perfectly clean, soft and it didn't fade one bit…When we were greeted by an overly excited English bull terrier at the dog park, I also didn't mind one bit that he drooled on the blanket. I just poured a little water on it and it wiped clean. My German shepherd sheds like no other, and one swift shake completely freed the blanket of her dark brown and black hair when it was time to leave.”
14. Quince Bamboo Quilt
Here, a hypoallergenic option that goes out to our allergy-prone friends (or those with sensitive skin). Not only is Quince’s mid-weight quilt made from natural bamboo materials (aka the best organic fabric for your skin), but it’s also OEKO-TEX-certified, which means it’s free from harmful chemicals or pesticides. On top of that, it’s filled with a lofty 180 GSM weight and features a luxurious sateen top layer with a smooth finish (that also happens to have temperature-regulating properties). Bonus: It’s machine-washable on delicate with like fabrics (tumble-dry on low).
“This quilt is beautifully made, feels like silk and looks like quilts I’ve seen for twice the price and more. Color is exactly as pictured and if falls beautifully. I was concerned about the size because it looked very large in the photos online—more like a bedspread…I ordered the king, which is the size of my bed, and it’s perfect. I have a very thick mattress, so my bed is likely on the high side, but it ends right at the frame which makes exactly what I wanted. Weight is perfect. Substantial but not too heavy,” one reviewer writes. Another person adds: “This viscose quilt is silky smooth to the touch; it’s perfect for people who like to sleep in a cool bed or are sensitive to allergens and high temperatures at night. The viscose material is very similar to mulberry satin silk, but is hypoallergenic, which is wonderful.”
15. Higher Dose Infrared Sauna Blanket
While this sauna blanket isn’t your traditional throw or duvet, we felt it necessary to include after an enthusiastic PureWow100 review from wellness director Sarah Stiefvater: “Though it’s not exactly the same experience as a traditional infrared sauna—not least because I do it on the floor of my bedroom—it’s an incredible alternative that has already become a crucial part of my wellness and self-care routines.” She explains, “A sauna blanket is a sleeping bag-like contraption that uses infrared rays to heat the body. According to Higher Dose, the sauna blanket elevates the body’s thermal energy, enhances deep relaxation, promotes glowing skin and improves circulation…For me, the biggest draw of the Higher Dose sauna blanket is its convenience. While I love a good hour-long sauna session in a gym or dedicated sauna facility as much as the next person, it’s been wonderful to be able to feel some of the same effects without leaving the comfort of my home. I appreciate that I’m on no one’s schedule but my own; if I want to do a quick sauna session at midnight, I can.”
Stiefvater raves about how easy it is to use, too, though she’s a bit skeptical of some of its weight loss and detox claims. That said, she adds: “I’ve found that the relaxation alone is worth it for me. It feels so indulgent to take 45 minutes out of my day to lay down in a heated blanket in a dark room (or bag) while listening to music or a podcast and not worrying about the million things we’re all worrying about at all times. It’s so refreshing and rejuvenating. I’ve also noticed that when I use my sauna blanket, I drink way more water than I would otherwise, which could contribute to clearer skin.” Her only con? “The price is definitely steep, but if you use it enough, it can be pretty easy to justify.”
What to Look for When Shopping for a Warm Blanket
What Are the Warmest Blankets?
As mentioned above, you want to narrow down which type of blanket you’re looking for. If it’s a throw blanket, for example, stick with wool, fleece and microfiber blends. If it’s a comforter, you want to opt for duck down or goose filling that’s RDS-certified (this ensures that the down comes from animals who weren’t subjected to unnecessary harm). For weighted blankets, you want to choose something that weighs approximately 10 percent of your body weight. And, of course, if you’re looking for the warmest possible option, you’ll want to go with an electric/heated blanket that plugs into the wall and draw electricity from small, thin wires that run through the fabric.
Is Sherpa Warmer Than Fleece?
According to Onuoha, “Sherpa fabric is made from synthetic fibers, while fleece is made from natural fibers. Fleece is softer and more insulating than sherpa, making it better for colder weather. Sherpa is better at wicking away moisture, however, making it a good choice for warmer weather.” She also adds: “While both blankets offer warmth and comfort, there are some key differences…Sherpa fabric has a soft, brushed surface that feels similar to wool, while fleece fabric has a smooth surface. Sherpa is also (typically) more expensive than plush fleece. Overall, sherpa is warmer than plush fleece, making it a better choice for cold-weather items.”
