‘13 Reasons Why’ Star Auditioned to Play Prince Eric in ‘The Little Mermaid’ After Tweeting Disney
13 Reasons Why star Christian Navarro recently nominated himself for the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s all-new The Little Mermaid…and it worked.
It all started last month when news broke that Harry Styles passed on starring in the live-action movie. When Navarro caught wind of the rejection, the 28-year-old actor shared his thoughts on Twitter and admitted that he’d be an ideal candidate to play the character.
“So, I heard Harry Styles passed on Prince Eric, well…I can sing. Black Ariel/Latino Prince…no one’s called but season three drops next week and I think it’s one hell of an audition,” he wrote, referring to the popular Netflix series.
Fast-forward to this week, and Navarro gave fans an update on his hypothetical “audition.” The actor confirmed that Disney not only contacted his team, but they also had him send in a video.
“@Disney saw this, saw your support and gave my team a call,” he wrote. “They wanted to see what I could do. Tapes sent. Fingers crossed. Let’s make some history.”
The new version of The Little Mermaid will star R&B singer Halle Bailey as Ariel, making her the first black woman to play the Disney princess. Several other celebs are in talks to join the cast, including Jacob Tremblay (Room) as Flounder, Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) as Scuttle, Javier Bardem (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) as King Triton and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) as Ursula.
Break a leg, Navarro.
