103-Year-Old Baton Rouge Resident Aces 2019 National Senior Games
When a runner's middle name is dubbed "Hurricane," you know they mean business.
Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins means business. The 103-year-old has impressed with another year of inspiring performances at the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year, the Baton Rouge resident became the oldest woman to compete on an American track following her completion of the 50- and100-meter dashes, per New Orleans' 4 WWL-TV.
For the 100-meter dash, she put many couch potatoes half her age to shame by clocking in at a bit more than 46 seconds. Unfortunately, she didn't beat the world record for her age group in this event, but Hawkins herself was the one who achieved that feat in a previous race year.
For the 50-meter dash, she completed the race in 21.06 seconds, which seems to be a world record for that event — Hawkins was the first to participate in the 50-meter race for her age group.

So what's the retired teacher's secret to living a long, healthy life? No surprises here: She credits her longevity to her dedication to being fit. "I keep active all the time," she said to 4 WWL-TV. "I have an acre of land. I work in it all the time. I have 30 bonsai bushes — some are 40 or 50 years old. That keeps me busy." Eating healthily and abstaining from alcohol and smoking doesn't hurt too.
On her track accomplishments, Hawkins said, "I hope I'm inspiring [everyone] to be healthy and to realize you can still be doing it at this kind of an age." We agree, Madame Hurricane. Congratulations!
