10 Things to Remember Before 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 20

Grey's Anatomy is finally returning on March 14 after a massive cliffhanger left viewers reeling at the end of Season 19. But do you even remember what that cliffhanger was—or what happened in that finale, period? The series has been off the air for close to a year because of the Hollywood strikes, so don't feel too bad if your answer is "no" (or even "hell no").

What Happened in the Last Episode of Grey's Anatomy?
1. Teddy (Kim Raver) passed out in the OR
Teddy served as a terrifying reminder to never avoid the dentist in the Grey's Season 19 finale. She spent the entire two-episode ender complaining about a toothache and then collapsed in the operating room right as she was about to cut into Sam Sutton (Sam Paige). Yusuda (Midori Francis) did compressions but it was unclear at the end of the finale whether Teddy was going to pull through.
2. The interns went rogue in a major way
With Teddy out of commission, Lucas (Niko Teho) and Simone (Alexis Floyd) went ahead with Sam's surgery. It was way too advanced of a procedure for two surgical interns, though, and Sam bled out quickly. This isn't the first time the interns have taken medicine into their own hands, but this particular incident is going to have major ramifications and could put the teaching program in jeopardy again.
3. Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Link (Chris Carmack) finally got together

Why were the interns left alone with Jo and Link's patient anyway? Because the dysfunctional roommates were out in the parking lot finally confessing their feelings for each other. They were so busy making out that they didn't see the pages that Sam was in danger or that the interns needed supervision. On the bright side, it's nice that they were finally honest with each other and can stop pretending anyone else has a chance with either of them.
4. The interns went rogue in a major way, pt. 2
Blue (Harry Shum Jr.) also went too far in the finale. He intubated Maxine (Juliet Mills) when she coded unexpectedly, directly defying her DNR order. Jules (Adelaide Kane) then discovered she was Maxine's medical proxy and was told to decide whether to keep Max on the ventilator or not. She decided to keep her on when signs showed that Max could recover, but it put a fracture in her relationship with Blue because he forced her into a terrible position. She told him that she hated him for what he did, but also confessed that she loved him for saving her favorite person. That's a big mess that will need to be untangled when Season 20 premieres.
5. Simone and Lucas also got together
Speaking of mess, Simone was set to get married in the finale, but she ditched her fiancé at the altar and ran back to the hospital to hook up with Lucas in the on-call room. Their honeymoon period was short-lived when Simone's fiancé got into a car accident while chasing her back to the hospital. The guilt caught up to Simone pretty quickly when she saw her ex. She and Lucas didn't get a chance to clear the air and figure out their romantic status before Sam coded. So now they have a bunch of unresolved sexual tension and a dead patient on their hands.
6. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) had a controversial take on Alzheimer's
Of course, it isn't Grey's Anatomy if Meredith isn't also getting into trouble. Most of the senior doctors spent the finale in Boston, attending the Catherine Fox Awards. Meredith unveiled her new theory that plaque in the brain may not be the cause of Alzheimer's Disease, which balks in the face of decades of medical research. She unveiled her theory to a group of investors at the award ceremony after sharing her ideas with her Grey Sloan family. Richard (James Pickens Jr.) warned her not to say anything about her theories until she had more concrete evidence, but Meredith went ahead and now the funding for her research hangs in the balance.

7. Meredith and Nick (Scott Speedman) got back together

It wasn't all bad news for Meredith, though. Nick was part of the Grey Sloan contingent at the awards, and after a few miscommunications, the couple was able to put their pride aside and reconnect. Nick is still head of the intern program at Grey Sloan, so it's unclear if they will be long-distance or what, but we are just glad they are no longer avoiding the fact that they are in love.

8. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) won the Catherine Fox Award

Bailey was one of the few people who got to celebrate at the award ceremony. She thought she was there to present the award but was instead surprised with the trophy herself. The Catherine Fox Foundation gave Bailey the award for her work teaching reproductive health techniques as the government continues to roll back protections and rights for women. It was a much-deserved reward for a doctor who has not gotten the praise she's due on this show.
9. Richard may have fallen off the wagon
Richard had a much tougher time at the awards. The plane hit turbulence on the way to Boston and Richard almost took a drink when they thought the plane was going down. Bailey smacked it out of his hand just in time, but it was still on his mind at the end of the awards ceremony. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) urged him to attend a meeting with her, but he declined. A few moments later, a waitress arrived and placed a cocktail in front of Richard. We await the Season 20 premiere to find out whether he caved and drank it or not.
10. Winston (Anthony Hill) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) reconnected in the finale
Winston and Maggie shook off their nerves about being nominated for a Catherine Fox Award by falling back in bed together. After their nasty separation earlier in the season, it was a bit of a surprise to see, although it's important to note that they did not define their relationship by the end of the finale. It's still up in the air whether they are going to try and work long-distance or stay together at all as Winston takes over the cardio department at Grey Sloan and Maggie stays in Chicago.
