The 10 Best Weighted Blankets to Help You Catch Some Zzzs
If you need help getting a great night's rest, a weighted blanket may be the solution.
While they've become a go-to tool for people who want a good night's sleep, weighted blankets have a background in occupational therapy—therapists have used these blankets for years to help with emotional and physical regulation. For the general public, though, a good weighted blanket is thought to help you relax enough to sleep through the night.
There's not a ton of research on using weighted blankets for sleep, but a randomized, controlled study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine had 120 people with insomnia either use a weighted blanket or a regular-weight blanket for four weeks. By the end of the study, people in the weighted blanket group had "significantly" better sleep, were more active during the day, and had less fatigue, depression and anxiety. People in the weighted blanket group were almost 26 times more likely to reduce their insomnia severity by 50% compared with the control group, and they were nearly 20 times more likely to get rid of their insomnia entirely.
There seems to be something to all those claims that weighted blankets can help you sleep. Weighted blankets come in different sizes, styles, and weights and, in general, most people recommend getting a blanket that's about 10% of your body weight. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, you'll want to get a 15-pound weighted blanket.
