Is Fear Ruling Your Life? 4 Things To Stop Saying To Yourself NOW
There are four assumptions about fear that we all have — and they’re keeping us stuck. (Photo: Flickr/LMAP)
We’ve been talking a lot about fear recently on The School of Greatness.
It’s because I’m fascinated by it and how to use it to your best advantage.
But beyond that, I’m learning so much about myself, how I operate on a subconscious level, and how I can show myself more compassion by understanding where fear comes from.
I had the opportunity to talk to Dr. Lissa Rankin about how we can heal ourselves (physically and emotionally) when we understand fear.
Lissa is an incredible example of this in her own life, but for her new book on fear, she actually traveled the world and talked to many people of different cultures to better understand our concept of fear in the West.
In our conversation, she pulled the covers back on how fear affects our physical health, how our society perpetuates a sick relationship with fear, and how we truly have the power to heal ourselves when we understand what we’re afraid of.
Lissa lays out the assumptions we make about our world that put us in a fear mindset. She calls these the Four Fearful Assumptions. They are:
Uncertainty is unsafe.
I can’t handle losing what I cherish.
It’s a hostile universe.
I’m all alone.
When we live under these assumptions, we are constantly in a scarcity mindset, worried about losing what we have and always expecting pain and suffering (even if it’s all in our subconscious).
However, if we choose to let go of these fear-based assumptions and instead live by the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths, we can dramatically change the power our fear has over us. They are:
Uncertainty is the gateway to possibility.
Loss is natural and can lead to growth.
It’s a purposeful, friendly universe.
We are all one.
It may sound easier said than done to let go of the fear you have subscribed to your whole life, but Lissa says this shift is key to healing yourself from a fear-based lifestyle (and all the physical effects of it).
When we make the choice to choose our mindset, and trust in the good that will come from a positive one, our fear turns into courage and our entire lives can change.
