Taco Bell Unveils Its Quesalupa During the Super Bowl. Here’s What It Tastes Like
Taco Bell has finally unveiled its newest menu item: the Quesalupa, which is served with a giant dollop of hype.
The fast food chain waited until the Super Bowl to confirm the new item was the taco served inside a cheesy flatbread, debuting an ad in the first quarter that bragged the innovation was “bigger” than Tinder, drones, and even football itself. Really?
The fast food joint built anticipation with the item popping up in test markets and giving devoted Taco Bell fans a preview if they were willing to preorder and pay for the unknown item on Saturday, picking it up at a pre-determined location between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
As Yahoo Food’s default Taco Bell reporter, I blindly ordered the item through the glitchy, error-message ridden website, somehow paying $5.11 with taxes for the $2.99 item (note: prices do vary by region and market). I eventually got a confirmation email confirming that I had ordered a Quesalupa. There went the element of surprise.

I then went to a midtown Manhattan Taco Bell to get my hands on the gold-wrapped item. The shell is similar to the Chalupa shell, a fried flatbread, but there’s a thin layer of melted cheese inside. The fillings are standard Taco Bell ingredients: ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and more shredded cheese.
Is it Taco Bell’s “biggest food creation yet?” It’s tasty, very buttery, and filling, but it doesn’t have the “wow” factor that the Doritos Locos Tacos had, especially given this much-hyped launch.
