'Zootopia 2' Is on the Way: Everything to Know
The original Zootopia made a big splash for Disney back in 2016, so it’s safe to say fans have been waiting for a sequel for a long time.
In an Entertainment Weekly interview with the movie’s co-director Byron Howard, he echoed fan sentiments, saying, “I think we all loved the world [of Zootopia] so much and got so attached to the characters, that we actually got a little sad when the film finally came out [because] we felt like, ‘Well, we’re kind of done with it.’ And it’s nice that there’s this potential for it to get bigger.”

Well, it’s confirmed – there is going to be a Zootopia 2, as Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in 2023. Here’s a look at everything we know about it so far, including the release date, plot, cast and more.
What is the Zootopia 2 release date?
In February 2024, Iger gave release windows for some very anticipated sequels; including Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3, both set to arrive in 2026.
Fans of Zootopia will be happy to hear they don’t have to wait quite that long for Zootopia 2. The sequel is set to premiere on Nov. 26, 2025.

What do we know about the Zootopia 2 plot?
The very succinct IMDB description of Zootopia 2 reads: “Brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her friend, the fox Nick Wilde, team up again to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers.”
So if there were any questions about the return of Zootopia’s main characters, Judy and Nick, it’s clear that the sequel will heavily feature them. Other than that bit of information, though, Disney has remained tight-lipped on plot details.
The studio did reveal that Zootopia 2 will deal with a mystery in the reptile community, according to Screen Rant. The promotional imagery shows the large “2” in Zootopia 2 stylized with the end of a snake’s tail – which makes sense, given that a new character named Gary the Snake will be introduced.

A “first look” clip was also released, in which Nick and Judy visit a town with hippos and beavers known as Marsh Market. There will also be more returning characters from the original Zootopia such as Mr. Big, Clawhauser and Flash the Sloth.

Who is in the Zootopia 2 cast?
The full voice cast of Zootopia 2 has not been confirmed. However, both of the actors who voiced Judy and Nick are set to return for the sequel. And a new star has been cast in the intriguing role of Gary the Snake.
Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps
Ginnifer Goodwin returns as the iconic main character Judy Hopps in Zootopia 2 – a bunny rabbit who works as a police officer and is dedicated to rooting out crime and corruption.
Goodwin is known for starring in the HBO series Big Love (2006-2011) as Margene Heffman, and in the ABC series Once Upon a Time (2011-2018) as Snow White. She’s also had a successful career in film, and other than Zootopia has appeared in movies such as Mona Lisa Smile (2003), He’s Just Not That Into You (2009), Something Borrowed (2011) and Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast (2014).
Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde
Jason Bateman is also returning to voice Nick Wilde, a fox and con artist who’s unwillingly roped into solving crime rather than perpetrating it.
Bateman is best known for his portrayals as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development (2003-2006; 2013-2019) and Marty Byrde in Ozark (2017-2022). But he’s starred in his fair share of successful movies, including The Switch (2010), Horrible Bosses (2011), This Is Where I Leave You (2014) and Game Night (2018).
Ke Huy Quan as Gary the Snake
Ke Huy Quan adds his voice to the Zootopia 2 cast as the new character Gary the Snake, about whom little is known.
Quan’s breakout role was as a child actor playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). He also played Data in The Goonies (1985). He later left acting for nearly 20 years, but made a triumphant comeback in his Oscar-winning role of Waymond Wang in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
Who is Zootopia 2’s director?
It’s been revealed that Zootopia 2 will be directed by Jared Bush, who co-directed the first movie and co-wrote the screenplay. He’s also written the Disney film Moana (2016) and wrote and directed 2021’s critically successful Encanto.
Is there a Zootopia 2 trailer?
The official Zootopia 2 trailer has not been released yet.
How to watch Zootopia 2
Zootopia 2 is slated for a movie theater release on Nov. 26, 2025. It’s not yet known when the sequel might be hitting streaming platforms such as Disney+.
A 2019 article from Collider suggests that Disney movies typically stay in theaters for about 90 days before they’re available for digital purchase and then on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD. It could be up to four months after that before they’re available to stream – which would be a seven-month wait time from the theater release to the streaming release.
However, it appears that this wait time has been cut down for some more recent releases. For example, the Disney movie Wish premiered in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023, and became available on Disney+ on April 3, 2024 – just four and a half months later.
Who is the villain of Zootopia 2?
Not enough is known about the plot of Zootopia 2 to identify the movie’s villain. However, it will apparently be introducing reptiles, including the mysterious Gary the Snake (voiced by Ke Huy Quan) who could be a potential villain.
But if we learned anything from the original Zootopia, it’s that looks can be deceiving. Just as Judy Hopps had to get over her prejudice for predatory mammals and learn that not all of them are inherently bad, there may be a similar theme in Zootopia 2 surrounding reptiles.
