Writer of Vogue profile excluding Democratic candidate says complaints are 'legitimate'
Amy Chozick, the writer who profiled five of the six female Democratic presidential candidates for Vogue magazine, joined CNN on Wednesday to explain why Marianne Williamson was excluded from the spread, though she was mentioned in the article. Chozick first acknowledged that the criticism from Williamson and her supporters is legitimate. But, considering Williamson announced her candidacy in January, Chozick’s first explanation doesn’t quite work chronologically.
“These magazine stories have a very long lead time,” Chozick said. “I think they started discussing the photo in March, and they took it in April, and at that time the field is so big that they decided that we should focus on the women in elected office.”
Williamson went on CNN herself on Tuesday where she disparaged Vogue’s reasoning for her exclusion, which was that they wanted to focus on the five female lawmakers, and Chozick clarified exactly why that was significant.
“Almost all of them won elections in which they were told there’s no way a woman can win that election. So they came with that set of experiences that we were focusing on,” Chozick said. “But absolutely was not a way to diminish Williamson, and I do sympathize with her supporters and her complaints about this.”
Erin Burnett OutFront airs weeknights at 7 p.m. on CNN.
