'Wonder Woman 1984': Gal Gadot and Chris Pine reunite in the '80s for sequel's first trailer

“Blue Monday,” breakdancing and big hair — our favorite Amazonian princess is living in the ‘80s.

On Sunday, the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 — the sequel to the 2017 blockbuster and origin story starring Gal Gadot in the title role — was aired for the first time during the CCXP 2019 convention in Brazil. Gadot joined director Patty Jenkins to introduce the preview, which shows her character Diana Prince (a.k.a. Wonder Woman) leaving behind the European battlefields of World War I and soaking up the excesses of America circa 1984.

It’s a flashy time of shopping malls — one battle scene feels reminiscent of Stranger Things’ own third season showdown — infomercials starring Pedro Pascal’s blond and power-hungry Maxwell Lord, and perms like the one Kristen Wiig sports in her role as confidant-turned-villain Barbara Minerva/The Cheetah.

“My life hasn’t been what you probably think it has,” Gadot’s Diana tells Barbara. “We all have our struggles.”

For Diana, the main struggle is getting over the loss of her true love, pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). But while Jenkins declined to divulge the details of how Trevor managed to return from the dead — and time-travel close to 70 years — he’s alive and well and rocking a potent combo of a windsuit and fanny pack in the trailer.

While humorous ‘80s references like this abound, this is still very much an action film, with Diana deflecting bullets, using her crown as a weapon and getting battle-ready in her new suit of golden armor as she takes down foes from D.C. to the desert. And fans of the superhero’s Amazonian roots won’t be disappointed; flashbacks to Themyscira and its population of all-female warriors are in the mix.

So far, fans seem to be on board for the ‘80s edition of Wonder Woman.

Warner Bros. has also revealed new character posters for the film, which comes out June 5, 2020.
