Whitney Cummings says she 'got in trouble' with HR for wishing an intern 'Merry Christmas'
Whitney Cummings says she “got in trouble” with human resources for wishing someone a “merry Christmas.”
The one-time showrunner for the Roseanne reboot talked about the holidays on Conan. She said that, aside from worries over getting the right gifts for people, one of the biggest stressors for her about the season is the “terminology.”
“Last year, I was working on a TV show [and] got in trouble with human resources for saying ‘merry Christmas’ to an intern,” recalled Cummings, not specifying which show. (She stepped down as co-showrunner of Roseanne in May 2018 — two weeks before Barr’s racist tweet led to the show being canceled.)
She explained, “I was leaving” before the holidays “and I was like, ‘Bye, guys! Merry Christmas!’ Just [as] a formality, what you would say... I don't even care how your Christmas was."
However, when she returned to the set in June, “HR calls me in and says, ‘We need to talk to you.’”
Cummings was told one of the interns was “pissed off” she said “merry Christmas.” She asked, “‘What should I have said? Do they celebrate something else?’ They were like: ‘Well, no, they’re agnostic.’”
She continued, "I was like, no, no, no, no, no. You do not get to do that. Because had I known that this person was agnostic, that would mean we were in a relationship, like, that would mean we were intimately connected."
Cummings went on to add, "I should not know who believes in God and who doesn't. I also can't guess either, you know? I can’t guess your holiday based on what you look like. That’s offensive — that’s very offensive."
