“At the end of the week, you will be an entirely different person,” says Christian Friedel, who plays the hotel manager. The nearly three-minute clip finds Kate (Leslie Bibb), Laurie (Carrie Coon), and Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) arriving at the Thailand resort, toasting to girls’ trip after not having seen each other in years.
The trailer follows Rick Hatchett (Walton Goggins), accompanied by his much younger-girlfriend (Aimee Lou Wood), as the latter attempts to get her rugged, high-strung partner to relax. “It’s a wellness center,” Chelsea says. “You should get a facial.”
The video also follows Victoria Ratliff (Parker Posey), who’s on vacation with her husband Timothy (Jason Isaacs) and their three children: Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook), Lochlan (Sam Nivola), and Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger). “We usually go to the Caribbean,” Victoria tells Mook (Lalisa Manobal), one of the hotel’s health mentors, in a southern accent.
Then comes Natasha Rothwell’s character Belinda, who fans will recognize from season one. This time, the spa manager from the White Lotus property in Hawaii is on an exchange program in Thailand hoping to hone her skills. “I really feel lucky to be here,” she says. “I want to learn everything I can and bring the magic back to Maui.”
“Everyone who comes to Thailand, they’re either hiding from someone or looking for someone,” Mook is overheard saying in the trailer, as Hatchett studies a picture on his phone of Sritala (Lek Patravadi), one of the owners of the White Lotus and the founder of its wellness program.
It all gets a bit blurry from there, but the trailer teases potential financial troubles for the Ratliff family and an uptick in crime on the island with the resort’s security guard Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) getting into a scuffle with an armed robber. “Your job is to protect the hotel,” Friedel’s character tells him. The girls’ trip seems to turn sour as well, with Coon calling her friends “vain” and “selfish.” The end scene wraps up with Belinda alluding to going home in a “body bag,” a call back to Armond’s (Murray Bartlett) fate in season one.
Season three of The White Lotus is set to premiere on February 16 on HBO and Max. According to the official logline: “The social satire is set at an exclusive Thai resort and follows the exploits of various guests and employees over the span of a week.” Creator and showrunner Mike White previously said the next installment would be “longer, bigger, and crazier” than previous seasons and this time would “look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.
