Who’s joining FBI in Season 7?
Although the cast of FBI Season 7 has not officially been confirmed, CBS has announced a new addition who could have a major impact on the crime drama. The day after the Season 6 finale, news broke that Mike Weiss has been hired as FBI’s new executive producer and showrunner. The TV veteran is replacing longtime showrunner Rick Eid, who stepped down in May. Eid had been with the show since it debuted in 2018 and is leaving to focus on Law & Order, which he also serves as the showrunner on. “After six years of running two, or more, shows, and CBS now picking up FBI for three more years, this was the perfect time for me to step back and focus my efforts on running Law & Order and developing new projects,” Eid said in a statement at the time. “I’m extremely proud of FBI, and couldn’t be happier for the cast, crew and producers. While I will no longer be the day-to-day showrunner, I intend to remain involved with the show going forward.”
Weiss is no stranger to the Dick Wolf universe, having previously served as a writer and co-executive producer on Season 3 and 4 of NBC’s Chicago P.D. His other credits include The Mentalist, Code Black, Stumptown and In Plain Sight. Most recently, Weiss co-created, executive produced and served as the co-showrunner on the Hulu mystery series Death and Other Details.

More: The best order to watch the FBI crossover episodes
In April 2024, FBI scored a rare three-year renewal deal, which will take the series through its ninth season in 2026-27. “The all-FBI Tuesday is a powerful force to be reckoned with on our primetime schedule,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement. “Dick Wolf and the talent in front of and behind the camera on all three series continue to deliver top-notch storytelling, riveting action and intrigue that has captivated a dedicated fanbase steadily across multiple seasons. We are excited to see what next season holds for all these heroic characters.”
Wolf added: “Obviously, I’m thrilled by the pickups. We are all extremely grateful to [CBS president and CEO] George Cheeks and Amy and their entire team.” It’s unclear if Weiss will remain the showrunner for the next three seasons, but the vote of confidence from the network is greatly appreciated by fans.
Unfortunately, the renewal does come with some budget cuts. Shortly after the show was picked up, Deadline reported that series regulars will have their episode guarantees trimmed by three to four episodes as part of a cost-saving initiative. Although this won’t affect the show too much, fans can expect to see a little less of Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, John Boyd, Jeremy Sisto and Katherine Renee Kane going forward. The spin-off series FBI: Most Wanted was also impacted by these cuts, though FBI: International was not since it’s cheaper to film and features newer actors with less expensive salaries.
Elsewhere in the Dick Wolf universe, NBC’s Chicago Med will also be facing a major creative shakeup. Just a few weeks before Eid exited FBI, longtime co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider announced their decision to step down after nine seasons with the medical drama. They will be replaced by Allen MacDonald, who’s best known for this work on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Body of Proof, American Gothic, 13 Reasons Why and Amazon Prime Video’s Harlan Coben’s Shelter.
