If you were hoping for answers about who Casey Goodwin is on The Way Home, then the Season 3 finale was a bit of a mixed bag.
More from TVLine
The mysterious time traveler proved vital to saving Jacob from Lewis Goodwin’s wrath: Casey gave Jacob proof that Susanna left Lingermore to the Landrys, which should get Lewis Goodwin to drop the charges against him. But it’s what Casey told Alice when they later ran into each other that was even more intriguing: Alice is not Casey’s mother. When Alice pressed Casey about being a Landry and a Goodwin, Casey didn’t want to break any more rules. So while Alice’s theory was ruled out, we still don’t have answers about Casey’s lineage, unfortunately.
The truth about Casey’s identity was almost part of the Season 3 finale, but showrunners Alexandra Clarke and Heather Conkie thought it was too big of a reveal to cram into the already jam-packed episode, they share in the below Q&A. (Get scoop on the finale’s other big twists.)
TVLINE | We did not get the full truth about who Casey Goodwin is, although they did rule out that they are Alice’s child. So should we trust their word on that and that they are from the future?
ALEXANDRA CLARKE | I mean, I think that you could do whatever you want, but I think that they… I love the Casey character so much. I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to give away. I think we can put that theory to bed.
HEATHER CONKIE | I think, for the first time, [they’re] actually telling a straight story. I think most of it.
CLARKE | The facts are, they’re clearly a time traveler, which means they’re a Landry, somehow, and now they’re saying, “Ew, no, there’s no way you’re my mom,” and I think that they know a lot more about how to navigate time travel than our current Landrys do because they’re from another time, and maybe in that time, they’ve learned a lot more. I love Casey, and Vaughan [Murrae] is such an amazing actor, and they’re so keen and love this role, because we get to tell them all the secrets, because they need to know them and no one else does.
CONKIE | And they’re actually well ahead. They’ve figured out who they were.
TVLINE | Oh, so they know Casey’s true identity/lineage?
CLARKE | Yes. Normally, we’re showrunners that kind of like to keep our [actors] in the dark, because if they knew the entire story, it would affect the performance. It just feels like that’s what would happen. But with Casey, because of the role they’re playing, they had to kind of know, and so, yeah, we sat them down and told them the truth.
CONKIE | They are so enigmatic in themselves that the role’s perfect.
TVLINE | I think that that’s a character that a lot of people were expecting to get answers about by the end of the season. Why did you decide to hold back? And is there a timeline for when viewers can expect answers?
CONKIE | There was no room!
CLARKE | [Laughs] We have 42 minutes! It’s funny, because in one of the original drafts, we did pretty much come clean, and it didn’t feel like the right time. Pardon the pun, but it just didn’t. We wanted to earn it a little more, and we wanted our characters to earn it a little more. We didn’t want Casey to just tell it and just reveal it. And so, we wanted to allow our main [characters] to kind of figure it out a little bit more for themselves. It’s such a big reveal, and we wanted to give it its space and its time and really make it as impactful as possible. So we just didn’t feel like 10 was the spot for it.
CONKIE | Yeah, there was so much in 10, it felt almost like cheating if we took it too far.
